Addicted to Facebook

I am a volunteer with a hospital radio station and manage its Facebook and Twitter so am on it daily. Its incredibly useful with linking with community groups and promoting all their events and appeals plus the hospital's, linking them together. I've met such lovely people through it.

I guess all Social Media platforms have their advantages and disadvantages. I became conscious that I was becoming too addicted to Facebook, Instagram, Mumsnet and Gransnet, but I discovered a handy little trick on my IPhone to help cutting down….
Go into Settings-General-Screentime-Set Limits. I set myself one hour daily for those apps in total (well not Gransnet as it’s not an app as far as I know). Your phone screen will block out the app when your time is up.
But you CAN override it😂😂😂

When I'm at home, Facebook is open permanently in the background. I don't belong to much but follow The Nursery Nurse for a very talented actress, highly recommended for smiles!!

She's great! Is her name Charlotte? I follow her on TikTok. She's amazing and does a lot of good in educating in all aspects of pre school care and situations which can arise.

I am on Facebook a lot less than I used to be - far better things to use of my time on.

Many in the younger generation must spend all their waking hours on 'devices' - Facebook, Twitter/X, Pinterest, Instagram, Tik-Tok, text messaging, steaming, You tube, WeChat, WhatsApp, SnapChat and others I don't even know the names of !!

Our grandparents, and even my late parents, (only gone since 2010 & 2012), would be bewildered at how younger people 'socialise' nowadays!

I think the best way of limiting your time on Facebook, or indeed anything else that you feel is taking up too much of your time or interest, or perhaps even becoming an addiction, is not only limiting yourself to checking Facebook only once a day, but also to making a list of other things you want to do, or perhaps don't particularly want to do, but will do, instead.

For example: Go for a twenty minute walk, without your phone (so you can't be tempted to check Facebook).

Make sure your phone, tablet, laptop or whatever you uses to access Facebook is not readily to hand while you do housework, shop or whatever else you do in the course of the day

Make a list of things you MUST do before "Facebook time" and stick to it.

Getting out of a habit is always hard , but it will get easier if you persist and don't let yourself be too upset if you fail at first.

I look on my local Facebook marketplace and local freecycle pages once a day to see if there is anything suitable for my wee grand daughter. Also look on gransnet once a day. Have no interest in other sites but don't feel I am missing out.

😂😂….there really are too many books to read ! Why on earth does anyone want to know everybody else’s business.

I can watch TV at the same time, so not really an issue. My fb notifies my email, so I can delete notifications. I use messenger instead of email, as the younger folks don't use email much these days.
I have a scattered family, and we are connected - I have used this to connect my DDs generation to their second cousins thru me.
I run a local parent's fb group - we are a rapidly growing town, with thousands of new families moving in so it is a great way for them to find out about baby groups and children's clubs, and events and local free meals for holidays.
I set up a page for my Rainbow Guides so parents can remind themselves of forthcoming events when they lose the bits of paper or forget dates/times, and pass on invites from region or county. It has the advantage of being both a broadcast means and a sharing mechanism for people with a commin agenda

I’m on the Facebook groups for all the villages around here, it’s the first place to find reports of flooded roads, fallen trees, faulty railway crossing lights, and lost dogs. There are a few “friends” - people I knew years ago, when my AC were little - but my interaction with them is limited to congratulations or commiseration at their reports of a family event, few of them would know me if we passed in the street but it seems churlish to “unfriend” them! Otherwise I read posts from various groups, recipes, gardening, dogs etc. I find it far less hostile and aggressive than X (Twitter), I’m not on instagram or TikTok, and I only use YouTube to learn how to do something like fix the radiator valve, not for humour or entertainment!

Why do people feel guilty for such a harmless activity???? (harmless unless you find yourself in a mudslinging contest).

I belong to many groups - exercise, oral cancer, feeding tube, word game, duplicate bridge, etc. all harmless.

I go on when I want and don’t label my time. I often find I can help someone in one of my groups. I stay away from politics or religion.

FB does so much damage to people emotionally. So many of my clients are adversely affected by the showcasing of the 'perfect' lives of others. Ok so people can choose not to look but these days it can be difficult. Personally I don't bother - it's all so false

It's okay to change to logging in once a day, but for how long will that one session last?

I am on Facebook and find it very useful for local information. Our local paper is now useless for information about local events as it is full of syndicated articles and has very little relevant for our town. Facebook has lots of information about what's happening locally. I don't use it any more to post photos of the family or to keep in touch with them - we do this either by phone or most days by WhatsApp. This works very well for us.

i go onto facebook every night, i only have family on mine, i can catch up on what my gc have been doing as my dil post's pictures and any family news, i also play some card games, i closed the wi-fi on my mobile and i don't have any apps or anything else, if anyone post's during the day they know i won't see it until after 7, i have a house phone so they know how to get me if it's urgent.

I won’t say I’m addicted but I do look at FB during the night if I can’t sleep!

I do however find things on FB that are very interesting to me.

I do try to check it once a day, I'm in touch with a few school friends, it's wonderful how we have got together!!

A lot of people think it's about looking at other people's business or holidays - but these days facebook is mostly about community groups and local opportunities, eg local events and places to visit etc You can really tailor it to the things you enjoy in life and your 'fbk friends' will hardly feature - and will probably not look at your posts either - so best not to chase likes and hearts. . Plus it's a great place to store photographs .
I usually follow art groups and theatre, music etc

Ive always wondered if there are a few "professional" responders employed by Gransnet to keep the posts active and interesting if any are slow movers; that could account for the frequent Abby time of day responses from some names

I like it to keep in touch with overseas rellies that I never see these days. Also a few distant friends and some of the historical sites. I love looking at old pics of London.

Not on Facebook but social media is compulsive including Gransnet some seem to be online continuously in waking hours.

Some of the nursery sketches are amazing! Very funny but as you say, very awareness raising too.

18:00 every day at the minute on Facebook there's a new chapter of the #Marjoreece storyline. Is it on TikTok too? So clever, plus "Reece" is really hot - and then I remember it's Charlotte too ☺️
