Daft ( strictly friendly !) rivalries

Saints ( Southampton football team) and Pompey (Portsmouth football team) .MrOops father was torn, he was from Portsmouth but his sons were all born in Southampton…

Our family is more than a little exercised about the merits and demerits of our two city football teams - Wednesday and United. SiL and GS are blue; DS and my late DH red - and there is much joshing but always an undercurrent of serious rivalry. Derby days are a nightmare.

Being an East Midlands girl my team is Derby County and Nottm Forest are our bugbears putting it mildly 🤣

I’m a Saints follower, too - the AFL team in Melbourne. One of the few, I’m afraid, because they haven’t won a final since 1966! Still, I remain faithful.

I could mention Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC - but friendly, it ain’t! Now that the latter are so far removed from their former days, there’s no rivalry on the pitch, but there’s still plenty of ‘verbal’ from both sides!

I was born in Derby and supported the Rams but moved to Leicestershire and met my Foxes supporting husband. When we married, we lived in Melton Mowbray and Forest was the most easily accessible for DH to take our football mad boys. And they were doing really well!!!

So, all our immediate family are Reds and now Derby County and Leicester City are the opposition.

Liverpool FC Everton FC same city but football can split families.

Yes geography does have a say in it. After we’d moved to East Yorkshire and had our son who is football mad he started going on football training schools run by Hull city so that’s his team and I admit to a soft spot for them. It’s much to the annoyance of DH who being born and bred there is Liverpool through and through.

I get that, I stoll have a soft spot for Derby (and dgs3 goes regularly!) and Liverpool (Son in law 1) and Wolves (Son in law 3)

England v Scotland - Six Nations not politics!

Bristol City and Bristol Rovers here. I don't like football but my late DH was a City fan. In Bristol we also have a sort of rivalry with Newport (and South Wales in general) which is just over the boarder from us, although I think this is fading with the younger generation many of whom have come to live in Bristol from London.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City here.

DH is a Spurs supporter and the family joke is that no-one but no-one mentions Arsenal in our house on pain of banishment!

It's Exeter and Plymouth here which are definitely rivals.
Friendly? Maybe not...

Bath and Glawster for rugby; I now live in Gloucester but much of my life was spent in Bath. So when they play each other I'm torn.

Denmark versus England, I am danish born and bread but have lived in England for 60 years. I am always torn in half, likewise my son who is very proud of his danish roots but born in England.

I’m originally from County Durham and my dad used to support Sunderland. He went with his friend to a friendly “derby” between Sunderland and Newcastle. It certainly wasn’t friendly! They were chased through some back streets by Newcastle supports and both beaten up. It would have been worse if others hadn’t come to their aid. Dad and his pal were ex army and they did manage to defend themselves a bit. I remember him coming home all battered and bruised.

I was born in Southampton but now live ‘across the water’ from Portsmouth.

My family is equally split so I keep my allegiance to myself. 😇😉

My rugby fanatic husband is English (as am I) but we used to live in Wales.
Whilst there we became firm friends (and still are) with another couple: he is South African and her brother lives in New Zealand.

Living as I do in the West of Scotland football rivalry that I witness is definitely not friendly but certainly in mhp daft

Himself supports Man. Utd. Always has - his house growing up was a ten minute walk from the ground - so man and boy! Dennis Law, Nobby Stiles and George Best played in those days.

His second favourite team is Nottingham Forest because he so admired Brian Cough’s way of management.

When I first took Himself home to meet my parents, he and my dad had some lively discussions! My dad was a season ticket holder with Man. City (at Maine Road back in the day) with Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee etc! Local kids in the terraced houses near that ground used to tout for business “look after yer car mister?” while the game was played. “I’ll pay you when I get back to my car!” was always his reply.

I was allowed to go with him to the reserve team games which were held every other week (remember those days when football was a working man’s sport - kick off at 3pm every Saturday afternoon?). He’d make up a thermos flask of beef OXO for us to share at half time. Happy Days!

Just to make you giggle …. This was 1970 and my dad’s car … was a pale blue Robin Reliant! 🤣

I remember when I was a child the boat race was a really big deal and you were either for Oxford or Cambridge. We were all Cambridge and wore a bale blue ribbon. Difficult to believe now when it’s such a non event!
