My fact of the day is that despite their songs only one of the Beach Boys actually surfed.

Unthaw means the same as thaw. Susie Dent just told me.

Really, "un" usually denotes the opposite of something. I can't think of an example where it doesn't. I guess Susie knows what she's talking about.

Indeed HPQ It blew my mind a couple of years ago when I read it.
I’ve used it occasionally in conversation to illustrate the magnitude of difference.
I seem to have an empty seat next to me quite often these days.
Funny that…
🤣

The chicken and the ostrich are the closest living relatives to the tyrannosaurus rex.

A cat has 32 muscles in it's ear.

The magnitude of difference between billion and million can be illustrated with this example of the time scale:

A million seconds is 12 days.
A billion seconds is 31 years.

That's really interesting, and worth memorising as so many figures are bandied about (govt spending and such), without most of us having a real grasp of the enormity of what a billion is.

The mantis shrimp has the strongest punch in the animal kingdom.

One of the tiniest fish in the world is one of the busiest.

The Danionella cerebrum is capable of creating sounds of up to 140 decibels.

A gunshot from a .22 calibre rifle produces around 140 decibels.

A mind blowing, but trivial piece of information I learned and bore friends and colleagues with is that one piece of scampi is called a scampo.

Of course!
That never occurred to me before.

A scampo is a langoustine (lobster family) (I didn't know that either) but scampo is Italian for prawn (shrimp family).
Confused?

The tall pointy headdress that woman wore in medaeval times was called a hennin.

Try dropping that into the dinner conversation.

My favourite band. I missed a lecture at Exeter Uni to come up and see them in Bristol. It was fantastic. I don’t care if they surfed or not. I loved their music. Still do.

Did you mean to sound dismissive keepingquiet?
Just a light hearted thread.

I might be going to Finland, so useless fact from me is:
Finland has a Burger King (or poss Macdonalds) with a sauna!

Oh goodness!

Helsinki had more McDonalds than anywhere I'd been before 😯

Enjoy your trip, do have a sauna. And buy a bag of peas for a healthier snack if they're in season!

I loved the Beach Boys!

Finland has the most heavy metal bands per capita.

That's my entertainment sorted then🤣

MissAdventure Thu 29-Feb-24 12:53:53

The only member of the band ZZ top without a beard is called Frank Beard.

annsixty Thu 29-Feb-24 12:52:15

Antigua where my D lived for several years has 365 beaches , one for every day.
However I assume that today everyone stays at home.

Gillycats Thu 29-Feb-24 12:51:48

I love the Beach Boys music!

Fact -
Water might not be wet!
The Sun makes a noise which we can’t hear.
Animals can be allergic to humans.

Callistemon21 Thu 29-Feb-24 12:29:46

And, going back to the Beach Boys, there are some lovely beaches 😃

Callistemon21 Thu 29-Feb-24 12:29:02

There are 187,888 lakes in Finland

Callistemon21 Thu 29-Feb-24 12:27:13

Presumably you go in the sauna, then the cold plunge pool then you're hungry and eat in the café!!
