I always say died or dead. I hated it went someone said my late husband about my husband as he was never late in his life. He was always early for things.

This has now reminded me of going to a party where the hostess invited one of her neighbours who she told us could be a bit curmudgeonly.
Another guest was talking to him and he asked if her H was there.
She told him that sadly she had lost two husbands to which he replied “that was very careless “

I don’t understand why people are so tetchy about a phrase that has been in use for centuries. Written use of passed away and passed goes back to the 1400s, both used down the centuries.

It just means when a person's soul or life has departed from the body. The etymology is French from passer whereas to die comes from Old and Middle English dēghen.

So sorry Miss Adventure I would imagine "lost" would sum up how anyone would feel under the circumstances..

I agree Annie. Hopefully I would never mock.

I meant to add I wouldn't use the word passed I would almost certainly say died.

I choose mostly to say lost, because that is how I feel.

I know my girl is dead, but she is lost to me.
I have no idea why or where she went, or if I may see or feel her presence again, so she is and will always be lost.

It does kind of skirt the actual issue, but it's up to the individual as to how they want to describe death, maybe those actual words, death and died just hit home harder at what is often an awful time in anyone's life. Possibly those who would substitute passing and lost sound less bleak, nevertheless it still amounts to the same thing. I'm all for not using euphemisms they often sound so very coy, but at such a time as the death of a loved one, I think we should allow people their foibles as to how they personally want to express that.

YouTube have started using asterisks for any word related to dying and death. People are now having to use words like "unlived* to get round it. Who are they trying to protect?

Their own YouTube accounts.

They can be given strikes for certain words, and end up being deleted.

Difficult for those who cover crime, easy for animal torturers, somehow.

I also dislike the term passed away, even worse just passed..
I especially dislike seeing posts on Facebook where people say happy heavenly birthday to their relatives who have died. Some people even add enjoy a drink on your heavenly birthday.
I often buy flowers to mark my deceased parent’s birthdays or the dates of their deaths. I buy the flowers in remberance, not because they are enjoying their ^heavenly birthdays. ^

Maybe these phrases and actions just help people who are grieving. We all grieve in different ways for different lengths of time. I mark my parents’ birthdays and dates of death, sometimes publicly, sometimes not, though I’ve never said “Happy Heavenly Birthday” Live and let live, or maybe live and let die
