Is anyone else struggling with shopping for 50+ bodyshapes? What do you all recommend?

Babamaman Mon 11-Mar-24 12:16:09

Don’t go clothes shopping ! Hate it ! Don’t go out.
Joggers and Primark long sleeved T shirts and old knitwear !
Yet I used to work in an independent ladies fashion retailer where we sold Gerry Weber, and other German clothing companies - so I still have a lot of my old work outfits!
Nothing like that shop anymore sadly !

I like Fat Face - excellent quality clothes but as they are quite expensive I wait for their sales, as they reduce prices by 30 to 50%. I like M & S for jeans as they suit my body shape. I've heard Asda are good value but I don't have an Asda near me.

I've found my style at last! I'm 72 years old so it's taken quite some time! I made all of this in the first picture: skirt, top and jacket but not the leggings, which came from Sainsbury's. There are patterns for leggings out there, of course. I get compliments all the time. I also make my own jeans, wide leg pants and tops with three quarter or long sleeves. That means I can wear V necks which I find more flattering than round necks and I can cover my ugly elbows. Dresses don't suit my fairly active lifestyle. They make me feel too "dressed up".

I've also been using colour change fabric for some of my tops. They are a lot of fun. They change colour when you go outside in the sunshine. (See the fabric with white then pink roses.) I make colour change tee shirts for my grandchildren too. Sadly, the colour change effect wears off after several washes but the tee shirts themselves are still wearable.

I bet there are lots of sad, lonely sewing machines at the back of cupboards! There are sewing groups and classes all over the place.

M&S carry an online range called Finery … their cut and styles suit me. Size 18/20

I don’t think there is an age when it comes to clothes. I shop at Seasalt and Grizas. Both of which show images of women of all ages wearing the same items.

There are definitely some clothes that look like ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ and definitely to be avoided.
I would not shop anywhere that was an over 50 place. How demoralising.
I think by this age people know what styles work and which don’t. Stick to what is flattering, comfortable and you feel good in.

I think one thing about getting older is that we have our own sense of style and what suits us. I am in my very late fifties (ok, l will be sixty in December) and I love colour and like clothes. I don't much like clothes shopping, though. I have always been pear shaped and now, thanks to lipoedema and an underactive thyroid am much larger than I would like to be. I find M and S trousers in black or navy fit and suit me best but the rest of my wardrobe is where I can indulge my love of colour. I like TU and am wearing a gold tartan duffle style coat from a few years ago. I like Joe Browns, Popsy, Seasalt and some vintage M and S. As l don't like the prices of these companies, a lot of my clothes are from eBay. My favourite shoes are Red or Dead Ziggy - again vintage from eBay. I am careful to choose new or as new when buying second hand and disinfect shoes before wearing. It means l have my own, somewhat eccentric, eclectic and slightly flamboyant, style. When I hear of clothes suitable for over fifties, it makes me think of how my grandmothers dressed at my age and younger. Always smart but dowdy old lady clothes. When going to an event such as a wedding, their fashion sense was that of the Queen Mother, including smart but sensible shoes and American Tan stockings. Why be old before your time?

So pleased we can all wear what we like. No one is going to put me or any of my chums in an "Age" box.
I have a dear friend who is 91, still looks fabulous, wears Jeans, great tops and is a dab hand in tieing scarfs, I can never get them right.

I wear what I like …Bright colours and lots of dresses including Maxis in the Summer so much so I started My own Instagram which has a steady following 🙂

BigBertha1 Mon 11-Mar-24 15:11:24

I surprised myself by buying a French Connection dress for a wedding the other day. I always thought tis brand was for the young and trendy.

WendyBT Mon 11-Mar-24 15:42:09

I confess I wear the same type of clothes that I did in my 20s. Jeans, T. shirts, Loose trousers in hot weather, gypsy skirts and smart jackets for work and meetings. I'm 5.7inches tall weigh just under 9 stone and am 72 years old.
Body shape - pah!!!

alexwaldron Mon 11-Mar-24 16:22:40

depends on each person's taste and mood

TiggyW Mon 11-Mar-24 16:24:02

My problem is not so much body shape as body length. I struggle to get any dresses which fit my short body. Any reasonably priced recommendations? I’ve just bought a Précis dress on Vinted - it’s still too long on the shoulders!! 🙄

Have you tried Seasalt Nomadica? - I'm addicted to their clothes and lots of size and shape options.

Marydoll Mon 11-Mar-24 19:17:16

White Stuff have a half price sale, launched today.

Sarahr Mon 11-Mar-24 20:42:34

I'm 62 and love Joe Browns. Always fit perfectly.
You need to find your style first.
My younger years I wore 1950's/1960's but can't anymore.
Now I wear clothes I never thought I could.

I was delighted to find a dress that suited my 60+ body shape very well. I liked it so much that I Googled the maker and found I liked every single dress on their website! Pomodoro. I'm not advertising just saying l liked their dresses. Not body hugging and often with three quarter sleeves. Nice fabric and good quality workmanship.

I got quite excited until I saw the prices!😲

Wow Lizziepopbottle, I’m so envious. Wish I could make my own clothes.
I worked in a factory one summer that made M&S underwear. My job was to sew the sides on pants. Easy enough really, but when it comes to clothes I’m useless. 😄

Aveline Tue 12-Mar-24 07:26:22

Oreo I don't buy many clothes because I just tend to slop about in the same old things. My Pomodoro dress was an impulse buy and I am so glad I splurged. Sometimes it's worth it.

I wear all sorts. Today I'm wearing grey sweatpants, the cheapest Puma ones from Sports Direct, with a Primark T shirt & lime green Asda jumper. My favourite going out clothes at this time of the year are the brightly coloured dresses by Orientique, an Australian firm. They're available online & from a couple of local boutiques near my home- pullover styles, very comfy & eye catching, about £80 or thereabouts although I got 2 for 1 in a recent sale. I have 5 & wear them all the time for going out of the house from Autumn through to summer. I've recently bought a lot of new summer dresses - Next, M&S, Primark & several from a really cheap online company from Scotland selling Indian dresses. They are lovely! My best dresses are from Bombshell, I have 10 now, mostly bought in the sales. They are beautifully made in England and the design & styling is very flattering.

Aveline Tue 12-Mar-24 10:24:04

What is this Scottish company selling Indian dresses? I really like these

I don’t buy many clothes and I try to buy secondhand as the amount in landfill is scandalous. M&S for jeans, as their long fit my 34” legs, the occasional Joe Browns piece in their sale, t shirts and shorts Tu, M&S or Matalan.
We have good charity shops near us, so I always have a look.

lizzypopbottle Tue 12-Mar-24 13:24:37

Summerfly thanks for the compliment! My mother was a skilled seamstress and taught my sister and me but there are local sewing groups and classes out there who are happy to welcome beginners. Reconditioned sewing machines are out there too. Google will surely reveal something near you.

Although long. long retired. I still buy clothes, mainly on line now. It has taken me a long time to know the styles that suit me. The Internet has certainly helped :Pinterest, You Tube, as well as Googling for on line stylists. I am a size 10 and rectangular in shape. I watch on line videos for styling tips but not slavishly. I also know the colours that suit me and buy items from Kettlewell Colours. Lots of help here with colours that suit and colour-co-ordination.I don't "follow fashion" but do buy fashionable accessories: handbags, costume jewellery. etc. I love tailored clothes but lead a far more casual life now.

They do look great, wonder if they have sales?
