Fashion shops for 50+
(59 Posts)Is anyone else struggling with shopping for 50+ bodyshapes? What do you all recommend?
So pleased we can all wear what we like. No one is going to put me or any of my chums in an "Age" box.
I have a dear friend who is 91, still looks fabulous, wears Jeans, great tops and is a dab hand in tieing scarfs, I can never get them right.
I think one thing about getting older is that we have our own sense of style and what suits us. I am in my very late fifties (ok, l will be sixty in December) and I love colour and like clothes. I don't much like clothes shopping, though. I have always been pear shaped and now, thanks to lipoedema and an underactive thyroid am much larger than I would like to be. I find M and S trousers in black or navy fit and suit me best but the rest of my wardrobe is where I can indulge my love of colour. I like TU and am wearing a gold tartan duffle style coat from a few years ago. I like Joe Browns, Popsy, Seasalt and some vintage M and S. As l don't like the prices of these companies, a lot of my clothes are from eBay. My favourite shoes are Red or Dead Ziggy - again vintage from eBay. I am careful to choose new or as new when buying second hand and disinfect shoes before wearing. It means l have my own, somewhat eccentric, eclectic and slightly flamboyant, style. When I hear of clothes suitable for over fifties, it makes me think of how my grandmothers dressed at my age and younger. Always smart but dowdy old lady clothes. When going to an event such as a wedding, their fashion sense was that of the Queen Mother, including smart but sensible shoes and American Tan stockings. Why be old before your time?
I don’t think there is an age when it comes to clothes. I shop at Seasalt and Grizas. Both of which show images of women of all ages wearing the same items.
There are definitely some clothes that look like ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ and definitely to be avoided.
I would not shop anywhere that was an over 50 place. How demoralising.
I think by this age people know what styles work and which don’t. Stick to what is flattering, comfortable and you feel good in.
M&S carry an online range called Finery … their cut and styles suit me. Size 18/20
I've found my style at last! I'm 72 years old so it's taken quite some time! I made all of this in the first picture: skirt, top and jacket but not the leggings, which came from Sainsbury's. There are patterns for leggings out there, of course. I get compliments all the time. I also make my own jeans, wide leg pants and tops with three quarter or long sleeves. That means I can wear V necks which I find more flattering than round necks and I can cover my ugly elbows. Dresses don't suit my fairly active lifestyle. They make me feel too "dressed up".
I've also been using colour change fabric for some of my tops. They are a lot of fun. They change colour when you go outside in the sunshine. (See the fabric with white then pink roses.) I make colour change tee shirts for my grandchildren too. Sadly, the colour change effect wears off after several washes but the tee shirts themselves are still wearable.
I bet there are lots of sad, lonely sewing machines at the back of cupboards! There are sewing groups and classes all over the place.
I like Fat Face - excellent quality clothes but as they are quite expensive I wait for their sales, as they reduce prices by 30 to 50%. I like M & S for jeans as they suit my body shape. I've heard Asda are good value but I don't have an Asda near me.
Don’t go clothes shopping ! Hate it ! Don’t go out.
Joggers and Primark long sleeved T shirts and old knitwear !
Yet I used to work in an independent ladies fashion retailer where we sold Gerry Weber, and other German clothing companies - so I still have a lot of my old work outfits!
Nothing like that shop anymore sadly !
If I like it I buy it I do buy a lot of tu white stuff and Roman to name a few I’m 5.2 I ain’t changing my clothes for a fella if he’s interested in me he will like me in a sack lol don’t follow the crowds be yourself
What on earth are you talking about? I wear anything that I like, non of this over 50s business thank you very much.
I wear pretty much the same kind of clothes I’ve worn for years, perhaps less revealing and ultra trendy though! I like New Look H&M, Dorothy Perkins etc and among my favourites are River Island, Monsoon and Coast. I also get some very nice things on the Secret Sales and Brand Alley websites which do all sorts of ‘designer’ clothes at reduced prices. I am 67, size 8 (though I’ve shrunk to 5’3” now!) and still love clothes after all these years. My daughters say I look ok ‘for my age’!
Age doesn't have anything to do with how I dress. Jeans and Church clothes (plain clothing) don't have an age, imo. I'm genetically slim, quite shorter by osteoporosis, wear size 8 - no age changes for my wardrobe.
I’m mid fifties, size 12-14 and I like FatFace, Next, Sainsbury’s, Weird Fish. Currently wearing FatFace jeans and a child’s M&S hoodie!!
Thanks again everyone. There are many ideas here. I too like the minimalistic look of White Company. I'm 5'3" and agree clothes can bury me.
@susiek I was generally an Allsaints type of style...a goth if the 80s, but now I want more structured, classic, probably a bit more minimalist. I think this is part of my problem...I don't want to be 'bohemian' as such any more.
I forgot to add White Stuff, my favourite for dresses. I know they will fit perfectly.
I like Uniqlo for basics - jeans, t shirts, down jackets, if I want to go a bit more up market it’s Cos, Sahara, Poetry.
Aveline I have a few Pomodoro dresses ,I like things without too much pattern so these suit me fine.I also buy Sosander,Phase Eight Roman Originals and Monsoon .I'm only 5 ft 3 and a lot of midi dresses are ankle length on me but the Pomodoro and Roman Originals are fine.My favourite Pomodoro is a mustard coloured shift dress with pockets its a good weight for winter
I don’t see what age has to do with it obviously I wouldn’t wear a crop top and bikini bottoms but I do try to stay on top of fashion
I like Roman, New Look, Joe brown (if I can get it in the charity shop and many others online or high street in my price range of charity shops if outside my price range
Today I m wearing a track suit for the allotment this morning and now Peacocks army green cargo trousers and a Roman cowl neck jumper
I think if you can work out what suits your shape, you can shop anywhere. Like Monica I've never had much of a waist and although pretty much the same weight as I was in my late teens I'm not the same shape at 75 although still a size 12. I'd think about what bits of your body are holding up well and wear clothes that focus attention on them and draw the eye away from the bits that show your age.
I like plain colours, and I’m a 12 too. I like the White Company, their clothes fit me well. M&S are doing some nice clothes at the moment too, but I have to try them on because the knitwear and shirts tend to be quite short (the fashion, but not for me), and the length of their trousers is very variable. John Lewis own brand is also good, and value for money.

I was delighted to find a dress that suited my 60+ body shape very well. I liked it so much that I Googled the maker and found I liked every single dress on their website! Pomodoro. I'm not advertising just saying l liked their dresses. Not body hugging and often with three quarter sleeves. Nice fabric and good quality workmanship.
I agree. I have a couple of their autumn/winter weight dresses, great with a pair of thick tights and flats. Good quality fabric and well made too.
The clothes you buy / wear tend to depend not only (if at all) on the age / body shape you are, but also on your lifestyle and personality. Are you outgoing / sociable, or are you more of a ‘quiet’ person? Are you at home much of the time, or do you like going places, being out? Are you still working? Are you married / single / looking for a partner?
Do you like ‘classic’ clothes, or more trendy?
Which of these, if any, are you drawn to?
I have never had a waist. Generally I do not have a problem with clothes. Like the OP I am a size 12. and shoulr probably be looking for clothes for the over 80s.
I am currently wearing Landsend jeans with an H&M sweater.
Shop all over the place online and off.
It depends on your style.
TU at Sainsbury, great value.
