Faffing about in Older Age!

I read an interesting thread o'er yonder on the young folks' site entitled 'Please tell me we don't all end up like this'

I recognise some of the traits; the constant worry about food and minor details, obsession about set meal times, indecision, minutae becoming huge. Bins loom large as does the Radio Times.

Anybody else?

Oh, and then ask if there husband is being unreasonable, because he is unable to help, because he is doing "a hobby" (think Morris dancing, but not that) grin

😂😂😂

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Mar-24 15:30:42

We had a lovely neighbour who faffed around doing Morris dancing.

Is 48 young or middle-aged?

No faffing here and the bins are not on my job list. Lucklily we are both able and divide the work probably equally so no faffing - possibly a bit too much cleaning on my part.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 27-Mar-24 15:48:10

The bins are above my pay grade. They keep changing the collection days and it’s entirely his responsibility to keep up with them. I know my limitations.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 15:51:44

Our rubbish goes into (if we're lucky!) two big wheels bins, so I've no real need to faff.

I've been known to purse my lips and mutter, if people keep filling them up though. (The bins, not my lips!)

Great point Churchview! Smoothing out old wrapping paper and stashing it in a drawer is fussing and being silly, or is it infact saving the planet.

I'm sure there are more of these.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 16:59:25

My mum used to tie her rubbish sacks up with string.
She kept pre cut (by her) pieces in a little owl ornament.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 27-Mar-24 17:49:38

I must admit to not wasting string - very useful in the garden.

I'm struggling to decide if it's worth bothering to comment on this thread.

I've decided not to.

At 78 I do find I have to actually force myself to go on outings that have been arranged. But I think it is less to do with my age and more to do with the fact that I was seriously ill two years ago and that knocked my confidence a bit.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 18:58:52

I've just thrown some string away.
I cut lots of bits for a project, which was much better in my mind than it turned out to be.

I feel I ought to have made it into a nourishing stew or something. 🤭

Thanks for sharing Millie.

One of my DS is particular anal
about mealtimes.
If I phone and they're eating, he'll either not answer or answer with a brief brush off.
I didn't bring him up like that.

I enjoyed that thread in the dark place . We have tv timetables delivered in the local paper on Thursday and included inthe Times on Saturday ,laughingly called Culture. We don’t use any of them .i use an App calledTV 24 which I use to stop DH zapping through the channels( faffing)
I do keep an ongoing list on a large pad of A4 which goes back to 2016 with plans short medium and long term . Sadly some of the long term ones have still not been achieved so that could be called faffing.
I do read the Elderly Parents threads to keep myself on my toes. I’m heading towards 79 and the comments those dear girls make can be salutary. I think they don’t understand how daunting downsizing is and decorators ,gardeners cleaners and handymen who’ve been with us for years are ageing and retiring and the apprehension of breaking in new ones is nerve wracking.

I don't think I am a faffer, but we do have set mealtimes , and also a set delivery day and time for my shopping to come, I find it easier to have set day as I then don't really run short of things and can plan around the day DH, has set days for his physio treatment and we try and meet friend for coffee on some days too. I try to plan our week rather a be in a tizz.

zakouma66 Wed 27-Mar-24 19:56:42

Stansgran, breaking in new servants must be a challenge.

mikaru Wed 27-Mar-24 20:04:20

I think I last bought the Radio Times in the mid-nineties. I thought everyone looked online now.
I am indecisive though. Dithering about whether to spend my ACLS payout on a Strathberry handbag.
I'm 76.

Norah Wed 27-Mar-24 20:52:14

I remove all package labels, shed all mail - is that faffing?

grin

Stansgran Wed 27-Mar-24 20:57:50

Not servants Zakouma66 , carers .confused

Take no notice, Stansgran

I'm worried in case the man who does such a good job of our lawns and hedges decides to retire. Other firms we tried are more expensive, unreliable and don't do such a good job either.

And yes, one day, Zakouma66, you may find you need help with some tasks. Think on before you make sarcastic comments.
Have you just popped over from Mumsnet by chance?

Instead of using words like o’er yonder on the young ones site
Why not say Mumsnet BTW, it’s not a young ones site. I read and post far more on MN than I do on here. There are thousands of MN members of an older demographic.

When mr i was diagnosed, I found a gardener who keeps the lawns in order. I still did the borders and kerchered the paths. Now I’m out of action with the shoulder fracture, I have staff. Cleaners fortnightly, gardener had to tidy the leaves and do some cutting back. I also had ‘men’ in to jet spray the paths. The rest of my support team are unpaid, my adult daughters who somehow manage to take me shopping and pick up emergency milk/bread and - take me to hospital appointments. They’re 😇

The o'er yonder thing was intended to be light hearted. Never mind.
