Do you own a toilet brush?

I know this is a bizarre post, but I am wondering!!

I have one. My daughter came home from work today and said the cleaning company had removed them all from the works toilets as they are 'unhygienic.'

She doesn't know what they are using instead!

MissAdventure Sun 31-Mar-24 20:14:22

Well, everyone who has a toilet brush cleans it, I presume.

knspol Sun 31-Mar-24 20:11:36

I've always thought they are dreafully unhygienic (yuk!) and I use ones with disposable heads. Unfortunately these heads can't be flushed so I have the ordinary kind in the downstairs loo for any visitor to use if required. I then always check to see if it's been used and if so thoroughly disinfect and bleach before replacing it.

I have a small cleaning business and I would always use a toilet brush. How else could I clean a toilet. Nothing is ever hygienic when doing this job but I would say it’s the go to method. After the initial clean with the help of a toilet cleaner and the brush,I usually wash the brush with a couple of toilet flushes with the brush in the pan before it’s replaced in the holder.

I have 3; one for each toilet.

Kathmaggie Sun 31-Mar-24 19:03:21

Or so

Kathmaggie Sun 31-Mar-24 19:02:52

They do have a purpose! I get them cheap and replace mine monthly or . L

Definitely nowhere for limescale to lurk, without a rim.

My last toilet was so old, I think I was cleaning out other people's gunk from under the rim. Ugh!!!

Mt61 Sun 31-Mar-24 16:37:27

Doodledog

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone know the pros and cons of rims in toilets, please? Should I go for a rimless one, or is there a good reason for having a rim?

Rimless are the best, no nasties stuck in the holes or black mould 😊

MissAdventure Sun 31-Mar-24 16:33:58

I don't know anyone who smashes their poo to smithereens.
Not that I've observed many people disposing of their poop.

grin

Mt61 Sun 31-Mar-24 16:32:01

I think smashed her poo to smitherines ha, huge lumps stuck to the brush 😩 I would rather flush a couple of times, then clean with the brush- but I never go in anyone else’s house & I wouldn’t want to use someone else’s brush

MissAdventure Sun 31-Mar-24 16:20:57

Surely black brush heads pick up as much as white ones, though?

The black colour just disguises it more.

Maybe we need brown bristles?

Barbadosbelle Sun 31-Mar-24 16:18:35

..

Me too. In attractive square JLP white ceramic holders.
And black brush heads…

I have one in each bathroom how on earth would I clean the loo!

Evidently you must be flexible enough to bend right down or kneel to get your hand to the grotty bits and you must tell your guests to do likewise if they have accidental remains.
I did find that having a water saving hippo in the cistern made flushing less efficient with excrement.

MissAdventure Sun 31-Mar-24 16:14:31

I expect our toilets are full of tiny poo particles.

Does everyone cover the toilet roll over whilst they're splashing about with whatever their weapon of choice is?

The cistern?
Handle?

Barbadosbelle Sun 31-Mar-24 16:09:52

Me too. I have four throughout the house and all fit into a ceramic holder (like a straight vase) which I half-fill with water and lot of bleach. I rinse the brush with final flush and then put in the holder. All the family know what to do. I change the liquid twice a week.

I’ve also made a point for a good few years now of only buying screw-on BLACK brush heads as even the bleach can discolour the white ones. The heads are very cheap (eBay) and so I change them twice a year even though there’s absolutely no sign of wear or discolouration.

Thanks for the laugh, Churchview!

I have two loos and two toilet brushes. I use them with proprietary toilet cleaners but I'm starting to get some recalcitrant lime scale in the main bathroom loo. I have some extra strong vinegar I'm think of using to try to shift it. I'll need the rubber gloves to get the water out first though. Not a job I'm relishing the idea of...

They will be banning a cloth from the kitchen sink next on the grounds of......unhygienic. The only unhygienic bit is the fact that it never gets cleaned properly - or indeed, used properly. I have seen ones with s....t and toilet paper clinging to the bristles. It's no good plunging into the toilet after the deed has been done. Flush and then plunge! And, yes, the occasional bleach (yes, I know it is a dirty word too) down the pan with the brush in it works wonders. My plumber came to turn my toilet 45 degrees. He said he had never seen such a clean toilet. I said would you like your tea and biscuits in here? I have serious OCD problems when going into public toilets and if there should be a brush in there, well, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Let alone, sit on the seat. Ugh. In Holland they charge you 50 cents to go in a toilet in the local Hema supermarket/cafe and Mrs. Mopp has just been in there, wiping the seat and giving it a spray of air freshener. How civilised is that! I'd pay £5 for that kind of behaviour here. And.....she does it with a smile and a cheery word. Let's stop treating cleaners like they are the lowest of the low. To me, they are the most important people. Phew......that toilet brush turned into a rant. Sorry. lol

I have a silicone one with nops rather than bristles.
Very easy to clean and disinfect, always looks spotless.

mabon1 Sun 31-Mar-24 14:58:04

I use Duck Fresh brush,a long white plasitc handle with a disposable, treated tissue. Toilet brushes are disgusting.

LovesBach Sun 31-Mar-24 14:52:03

Toilet brushes make me want to heave; scrubbing them around the pan and then putting them back into a holder? Oh yuk yuk yuk. I squirt bleach around the pan regularly, and then frequently attack the pan with good old Cif and a cheap nylon scrubber which is thrown away.

SueEH Sun 31-Mar-24 14:39:32

I’ve got a really posh one that I’ve never used 🤣 I just use bleach and stick my hand down when it needs a scrub (after flushing away the bleach ….)

Zuzu Sun 31-Mar-24 14:21:37

I use one with a disposable scrubbie in my house. I start with the new head in the sink, move to the tub that I've lightly sprinkled with cleaning powder like Ajax or Comet, then the toilet last which also has been sprinkled with Comet. After scrubbing, rinse, then spray the sink/all areas/&toilet with glass cleaner and wipe sparkly with a towel. In our motorhome, I keep a toilet brush near both toilets bc there are "tracks" that sometimes stay behind. You shouldn't use bleach in these toilets, it degrades the rubber connections and alters the good bacteria needed in the holding tank, so I use non-bleach cleaning wipes. And bleach the brush as needed.

Duvetdiva Sun 31-Mar-24 14:14:35

Witzend

To me, what is far more ‘disgusting’ than a toilet brush, is expecting anyone (especially any guest) to use their hand and loo roll in the bowl, to get rid of any ‘evidence’.

It’s their own ‘product’ I don’t see why you find that disgusting. Better that than leaving evidence on a brush! Yuck!

I agree with Vegansrock, you wipe yourself with toilet paper, what goes down the toilet is just the same do you use a toilet brush to wipe your bottom!

The Romans had xylospongium of course for that...
Sponge on a stick.
