When I got a new bathroom I got myself a John Lewis brush whose head you could replace when needed.
I still have it but found it hard to use with the shape of the new loo, so I got.a slimline silicone brush and find that works much better keeping things clean and limescale freexl, we have v hard water here, and keeping it well scrubbed avoids or lessens the build up of limescale and the need for chemicals to remove it. I was brought up in a soft water area and hate limescale. I don't know if it's true but I imagine it traps germs, even if it doesn't it looks horribly unsightly
Obviously both brushes are put away clean. If a brush is worn, manky and never cleaned, you're best without one, or even better, get a new one!

I have a silicone loo cleaner in each bathroom, they do a great job and they’re a lot easier to keep clean.
To Labradora and anyone else that uses it, bleach only works in cold water. If you don’t believe me take a look at the info label on the bottle.

I still own a couple but no one is allowed to use them except me, occasionally to work at limescale in an otherwise very clean loo!
The interior of toilets can easily be cleaned with bleachy toilet cleaner applied with loo paper then flushed away.

I have a silicone one. It cleans very easily and much more hygienic than the bristle one which harbour all sorts!

Years ago, I was taught by someone in a professional cleaning company the best way to clean a loo. The first thing was to use the loo brush to pump up and down which lowered the water level. This meant that the normal water level where most of the dirt/bacteria were could be properly cleaned with the brush and cleaning substance.

Since then I have always done this; no need for bleach. I use a mixture of vinegar, washing up liquid, water and Tea Tree oil instead of the cleaning liquid used then. I spray the same mixture onto all the surfaces of the loo seat, lid, flush etc., and wipe it off with loo paper. Actually I do that bit first then flush the paper away before doing bowl with the brush.

I don't like the smell of bleach so wouldn't like having the brush sitting in it, but the thorough whooshing up and down in the toilet bowl then leaving to dry seems fine.

It works for me, and no nasties going into the water system.

This is more or less what we do, though I use a small amount of "Toilet Duck" myself. I never use bleach, don't like the smell or the fact that a tiny splash would take the colour out of fabrics.
As JackyB says bleach is not an acid, but an alkali, so exactly the opposite and absolutely no use with limescale which is also alkaline. Although it might make it look clean it is still there unless you use something acidic remove it. You can get an acidic spray gel which apparently works very well.
Fortunately we have softened water so don't need this.

As a person who, over the last few months, has from necessity been obsessed with the proximity of loos and the embarrassments connected with their use, I am in favour of toilet brushes. Lack of would cause me problems. Sorry - TMI!

Without a brush how will under the rim be cleaned. The water holes can clog up with eg limescale, mould. Can't imagine a wipe with a cloth will remove any build up.

Quite. There’s a limit to how clean you can get it by just using the flush.

What was the certain female visitor meant to do with a loo brush in someone else's house, though? It was good that she cleaned up after herself, but how was she supposed to clean it without knowing where you keep the necessaries?

I have bought brand called Umbra, really slim & smart looking, my husband hates loo brushes so I only use it to clean the loo with bleach. Replaced the oxo one as it was a nightmare, water would leak on the floor) These are weighted so don’t fall over. I collect mine in a bucket & soak in disinfectant or bleach. I turn it round so you can’t see the bristles. I know what people mean on here that they don’t look nice- we had an old fashioned wooden one at work, it was always covered in wet paper & god knows what else! It was never cleaned 😩 Mind you did catch the cleaner, cleaning around the toilet seat with a shitty old string mop!

We replaced our toilets with rimless, amazing so much more hygienic.
Loo brushes are only dirty & unhygienic when people can’t be bothered to clean them on a regular basis. We did have a certain female visitor who left our brush in such a state in our guest loo, I just had to bin it, it put me off having one in there! Just have them in the upstairs bathrooms. BTW ZALFLORA? Do amazing disinfectant sprays now- could give the brush a quick spray in between cleaning.

Personally I can’t stand them and think they are unhygienic. I’m another one who loves using bleach.

Astitchintime. Chlorine bleach isn't an acid, it's the opposite, an alkaline solution.

I've got one of these, easy to use, as hygienic as possible and it doesn't get tangled up with toilet paper

Doesnt seem to get in the corners and creates more waste and cost. Rubber gloves and dedicated cleaning pad washed and dried outside was better. Some loos seem to have more tight corners to clean.

We discovered the silicone loo brush. It's brilliant. Can be rinsed, washed, bleached and it keeps the loo clean without damaging the porcelain so no more having to scrub or bleach the life out of it. We moved in 7 years ago and put in a new bathroom and ensuite. Not once had problems and loos look as though they were installed yesterday.
