Do you own a toilet brush?

I know this is a bizarre post, but I am wondering!!

I have one. My daughter came home from work today and said the cleaning company had removed them all from the works toilets as they are 'unhygienic.'

She doesn't know what they are using instead!

Exactly.

Anything loose is surely flushed away unless the flush isn't working properly?

Toilet gel left for a while followed by a scrub with a brush, rinse the brush thoroughly with another flush and change frequently.

The thought of rubber gloves going near a loo makes me feel a bit queasy, hope they are kept just for that purpose!

I thought about this thread when cleaning the cloakroom loo this morning and wondered what on earth I would do without a brush. Having dupuytrens contracture, I can’t get my fingers into rubber gloves.

Mollygo Fri 05-Apr-24 15:37:16

Casdon,
I just don’t get why anybody would voluntarily use their hands.
Me neither, but I’m very impressed by the flexibility of GNs who can bend low enough or kneel down to reach the water line.
Incidentally, because of this thread, I looked out for and inspected the toilet brushes in the Hilton and on our cruise ship. In both places, they existed and were immaculate.

I’m not putting my hands down a toilet used by others for anything, whether wearing rubber gloves or not. A silicone brush has no seams, nothing sticks to it and it can be effectively disinfected whilst it’s in the toilet. I just don’t get why anybody would voluntarily use their hands. Each to their own though.

Loo brushes gave me the willies so I stopped using them. I have a pair of long black rubber gloves and hand scrub the toilet each week.

Sumarsh1960 - I'm a cleaner too and use ( and sometimes provide ) toilet brushes . Some of my clients don't have them and boy , it shows ! Eeech !

With a rimless loo, there is still part of a rim at the back, which is where the water comes down when you flush. It cascades all round the sides. Just so much less rim for any nasties to get captured beneath.

I will stick to a loo brush (cheap and frequently changed) and Harpic. They work. If we have guests they always have a brand new cheapo loo brush.

Bleaching isn't enough to break down a stubborn skidmark.

Actually, I read recently somewhere, that a lot of the household tips for cleaning work just as well with warm water, without all the white vinegar, baking soda, and other things people add.

Jaxjacky Mon 01-Apr-24 17:27:02

Probably just bleach them GSM so they can’t be seen 🙁

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 01-Apr-24 16:51:53

Exactly - and how to tackle those under the water line with just rubber gloves and loo paper? And where do you wash and keep said rubber gloves?

hollysteers Mon 01-Apr-24 16:28:33

Posters with cleaning tips are missing the point. Skidmarks are what worry me!

Spencer2009 Mon 01-Apr-24 11:06:33

Not had one for years, find them disgusting, bleach and rubber gloves for me

Etoile2701 Mon 01-Apr-24 11:04:21

We went to a hotel recently and my DH managed to block up the toilet (not for the first time!) and asked for a toilet brush, but was told they don't have them as they are considered unhygienic. So the staff went out and bought one. We have them at home but I can see that they could be unhygienic.

I have a silicone one with spaced out raised bits on it, which as someone else said I leave in the loo with bleach after cleaning .... but apparently it's invisible to the male human eye!

Without a brush how will under the rim be cleaned. The water holes can clog up with eg limescale, mould. Can't imagine a wipe with a cloth will remove any build up.

As I have mentioned, our loo is rimless, soooo much better than a rimmed one, if anyone is replacing their loo, get a rimless one. So much easier to keep clean.

As for the water holes, I clean them with an old toothbrush.

And it is not then used for brushing our teeth!

Very best thing for cleaning a toilet is a small washing-up bowl filled with hot water and a squirt of cheap biological washing liquid or powder (I uses lidls) Pour down the toilet and leave for a few hours or overnight. No brush needed.
For limescale I use white vinegar overnight but on its own not mixed with any other cleaner.

Bleach is a acid,
which kills germs in a very small area for a very short time.
Germs will always be with us,
bleach ends up going down the sewers and is then classified as "not now MY problem"
How many dead rivers and streams are we now seeing, not to mention the amount of fish we don't see any more?
Next time you poor acid down your sinks and drains etc,
think to yourself am I contributing to polluting the Worlds Oceans?

FYI bleach is most definitely not an acid it's an alkali.
Vinegar is an acid and dissolves limescale. But don't ever mix them as you will create poisonous chlorine gas.
And yes I do have a toilet brush in both toilets.

I have one in each bathroom how on earth would I clean the loo!

Evidently you have to be very flexible to bend over or kneel down and get your hands in there. Warn your guests what’s expected if they notice they have left stains.
Incidentally, since we’ve been saving water with a water hippo in the cistern, the flush is less efficient at shifting anything except urine. Sometimes needs several flushes, go not really water saving at all.

Does anyone remember Kim and Aggies cleaning programme many moons ago? They had an edition on toilet cleaning and didn’t use a brush. I clean my loo after use - spray all over with eco friendly bathroom spray. Use toilet paper to wipe handles, seat, swish round inside, you may need to repeat with fresh wad of paper, flush, wash hands. Takes all of a minute or two, no kneeling , no brush required.

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone know the pros and cons of rims in toilets, please? Should I go for a rimless one, or is there a good reason for having a rim?

Rimless are the best, no nasties stuck in the holes or black mould 😊

I wondered about rimless loos.A question- when flushing the loo, the water cascades down from the cistern above and emerges from under the rim of the loo.So, where does the water enter the loo from with a rimless one?

Haydnpat Sun 31-Mar-24 20:35:48

Always use a flush away pad on a long handle, hate toilet brushes, so unhygenic

IamMaz Sun 31-Mar-24 20:35:37

Of course putting it in the dishwasher is a joke! It’s an old favourite on here! LOL
