Why oh why......

Is there an opposite to sods law? One about actually, most of the time, clean water comes out of the taps, kettles boil, the roof stays on the house, the dishwasher does work.......and more. Any suggestions for a name for things going ok whether we notice or not? I do understand the frustration when something does go wrong, but it would be good to have a phrase for when good things happen and go on happening.

My electric meter broke down at 8.30 am on Christmas Day. Very lucky we had no guests but instead no heating, oven, fridge freezer no light from 4.pm for two days. Not even a cup of tea!

I would hate our dishwasher to break down at any time, but a part of me looks back with nostalgia to when washing up was a social event, with one family member at the sink and the others, including guests, with a tea towel each.

Ah, the good old days (all days, when old, are good)!

New Years Day, the joint is in the oven, family of six expected, when the men from the gas board are there and the gas has been cut off because there is a leak in the pipe under the road outside.
We just had to change plans, cut up the meat and had a barbecue. Luckily we had a big garden and we made a big fire, the children loved it.

Perhaps it had a cunning plan to bring a group of people into the kitchen to chatter together while they wash and dry the dishes for you leaving you, the host to pop them away while someone else sorts the coffee out. No? But its a lovely thought isn't it

We were all due at my sister's and brother-in-law's one Christmas until she went to warm some mincepies in the oven and discovered it was no longer working. The turkey and my sister and family made a round trip on the M25 to us on Christmas day!

Oh I know exactly what you mean! My work laptop would announce a massive update just when I was planning on running the payroll.

Aargh! I feel your pain.
Reminds me of one Christmas day phoning 111 and driving DD to the NHS24 hub to sit and wait for hours to have a huge swelling on her leg burst by the only GP .
I had to drive as I was the only one who hadn't been drinking....yet.
I am still grateful to that doctor.

This is what is known in Scotland as McPherson's Law.

Other examples from my personal experience include
The cat is always bitten by a rat and the bite turns septic on a public holiday or on the day before one AFTER the vet has gone of duty.

Likewise any member of the household is likely to be afflicted with a gum-boil or an infected root cavity on public holidays or the eves thereof, when you cannot get hold of a dentist.

The printer breaks down completely and the server is off-line when you have some important document to send ASAP.

kittylester: I do sympathise. I once had the sink drain block completely when I was supposed to be serving breakfast and washing up for 200 hotel guests.

I finished up washing up in a basin placed on a narrow window-sill while the hotel manager and a plumber took up most of the kitchen floor space in their united efforts to unblock the drain.

Why? It's the same law (SOD) that says a car will mostly break down when it's cold, dark, and wet, and very likely you're some way from home too!

GrannyIvy when newly married and hard up, we had the joy of the washing machine, oven and vacuum cleaner all dying in the week before Christmas. None of these were economical to repair, so a great deal of money was spent just to 'get back to where we were'. My parents kindly bought the turkey.

The oven broke down two days before the new owners were due to move into our house. It cost us £250 to get it fixed.

I know the feeling - the door fell off our (4 year old) dish washer on Christmas Eve and we couldn't get it fixed until after New Year

Our oven refused to cook the Christmas turkey one year! Luckily our neighbours had to work and were cooking in the evening so we used their kitchen. By the time we'd walked between houses to cook it, most of our guests had all had rather a lot to drink to pass the time. It ended up as a very pleasant day!

Yes! I had a viral chest infection and on the Friday I was convinced I felt worse but put off trying to see a doctor until Monday. By which time I was incredibly ill and couldn’t even get to the surgery so had a home visit. Turned into pneumonia!

In answer to the OP, yes, these things always happen at the most inconvenient times, don’t they? One year, my oven died Christmas Eve. Managed to get a new one and bring it home ourselves and my electrician brother guided us through setting it up safely.
These things are sent to try us, aren’t they?

It’s called ‘Sod’s Law’ ☹️

In the middle of cooking a turkey or Christmas the oven stopped working .
I had to ask my neighbours to cook it only understandably, they had their own turkey to cook !
So I cut it up and cooked it in sections in their smaller oven .
It came out well .
