Return of the Granny trolley!

I lived in Gibraltar when the border opened in the 80s as well, also bought a shopping trolley for the market in La Linea! Remember the queues on the way back in!

Reading this thread initially, l thought that you were talking about old fashioned and So useful Tea trolleys. I have two. One l leep in the bathroom yes...thats right .... the other is used as a Tea trolley

Makes sense instead of shopping bags. Wonder just how easy it is to empty out the shopping, bending to reach the bottom or half emptying and then lifting out the remains with the liner bag. Suppose it could be done sitting and then the goods put away. Wonder if any good as cabin luggage, some of the cases I see on planes seem enormous.

I can hardly believe that some people on here are too proud to use such a useful aid!

My DMiL, who died last year aged 98, was a bit like that. She saw walking sticks and shopping trollies as somehow signs of ageing and was determined to avoid that 🤣🤣

Personally I will use anything that makes life easier and shopping bags on wheels do.

I started using a shopper because my then teenage son regularly asked me to bring "a few bottles of drinking yoghurt" or such things right after I had done a big shop with my car. I started having problems with my back and my shoulders, so started using a trolley! I now have a beautiful wicker one, beautiful but rather heavy - not a problem because it's only for the smaller local shopping 😊

I shared a house years ago with two other girls. We did the cooking and shopping one week in three and the other weeks did the household cleaning etc, As I was the only one with a car I made sure the cupboards were well sticked with any heavy items such as tinned foods when it was my cooking week, but one of my housemates used a trolley even then when in her 20's. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have saved her from back problems etc and she now has serious issues with her mobility and walks with a stick. I can't help wondering if years of not carrying anything may have resulted in her not developing her muscles in the same way. She may just have been unlucky but she is younger than me so I really notice how much she has declined.
If I had to give up driving I guess I'd buy one as carrying heavy bags is not something I relish and I prefer to shop in person, though for small top up shops where I walk to the corner shop, I wear a small rucksack and just pop my credit card in my pocket so I don't need a handbag..
Since the pandemic my DD rarely enters a shop. She does almost all her shopping online having groceries delivered, so I don't think she'll be investing in one any time soon. The nearest she gets to a shop is ordering 'click and collect' and driving to pick it up.

I use a shopping trolley to walk. It is because of a pinched nerve in my spine. i suppose it helps me.i will never forget the look on my neighbors face when she saw I was using one.

I have a bright red and white one from IKEA. We got it to carry all the essentials along the tow path to the narrow boat.
It was a life saver in lockdown, when not shopping frequently , but now it’s going to be used again. It folds up and hangs on the supermarket trolley. With the bag removed, I have shifted bags of compost too.

I use a trolley on occasion but not when its raining. Its a good idea because if I do venture into a supermarket I always buy more than I wanted in the first place.

I still get deliveries when I need heavy stuff coz I've never liked shopping for groceries. I even use click and collect which to my mind is well worth the 50p to not wonder around the shop picking up things I don't really need.

I love mine and so useful especially since I had breast cancer surgery and carrying heavy shopping out of the question. I have a real girly one with big pink flowers on!

Having just trekked from the shops to the nearest car park, bemoaning the weight of two shopping bags a handbag and a bunch of flowers, all the while grumbling to myself that not so many years ago I would have found it easy, I'm ready to try anything - even an old lady's shopping trolley! I just need to accept that yes, I am an old lady!!!

I got my fun print cow one I call " moo" when my daughter went to uni.
"Mum can you bring me this? " Etc etc. got on and off the bus and train many a time with mine.
Had it 15 years now, walking to the shops for a few items, including heavy ones is no chore now.
I expect I'll progress to a push one with 4 wheels as I get more mature but I think they are great.
I agree who would carry a suitcase without wheels nowadays? I did once see some students packing shopping into a wheeled suitcase, it's just the same!

I did the same BlueBelle left it in one aisle by mistake.

I rest a supermarket basket on top of my tolley and put the stuff in there. Or beside my trolley.

It works for me as I shop every day so not loads of shopping, but sometimes it is heavy.

Ditto…exactly what I do with mine in Supermarkets.
As a book dealer I’ve been using mine for over 40 + years to take parcels to the PO. Now semi-retired mainly I get the Royal Mail to collect my parcels, but still use the trolley for shopping and taking other things to various U3a groups, etc. It’s old and worn now and was thinking of getting a replacement, but hope to find one somewhat cheaper than those ‘designer’ versions!!

I gave one to my DD and DSiL when they didn't have a car for a while. My DD used it happily but my DSiL absolutely refused . When they got a car they gave it back to me. It sat in a hall cupboard for ages but I'm now going through chemo and it has proved to be a lifeline. It's not at all far into town but it means that I don't have to carry loaded shopping bags. Money well spent I think!

They are so useful but a few years ago I had to stop using mine because I have a short hill to climb from the supermarket to my house and (because they are so handy) I frequently had too much weight in it and ended up injuring my shoulder. I could use the bus but, again, lifting it on can also be a problem. Do be aware of the pitfalls as well as the benefits - but I'm thinking of using it again!!

I've had one for about 10 years. I use it every day. Its a Rolser 4 wheeler. 2 inside pockets one with a zip 1 external pocket with a zip. I think it was about £25 or £30 when I bought it and I thought that was quite expensive for a trolly but it's been absolutely worth it's weight in gold. BTW 2 of the wheels fold so that it can be pulled or pushed. I wouldn't be without it.

I had one years ago when I lived in France. Everyone uses them. As there are weekly markets - so very practical. Even Gucci & Louis Vuitton did them. There are some with clever wheels that you can easily pull up flights of stairs! Nothing grannyish about them at all! Purely very sensible

I love my shopping trolleys! My Dd and I bought beautiful colourful ones on holiday in Belgium which fold flat and she uses it when going to the farm shop for heavy goods. I’ve a smart black Rollster and also a much-used paisley-pattern trolley which folds over at the top and has a periscope handle. Useful for overnight stays or shopping

Winterwhite I think what you want is called a ‘sholley’. My aunt had one and found it helpful.

When travelling I hated my pull along suitcase and put it in an airport trolley whenever I could. Now use a sideways rolling one, much easier on the back.

I bought my first trolley when 50 and waiting for a hip replacement. I’ve never since carried my shopping home and also, 30 years later, I catch the local bus home with my trolley load of shopping.
With old age the hills get steeper and everything gets heavier.

I would think that pulling is less effort than pushing.
