Best fiver I spent recently 🙂

I don't eat there myself, being a veggie and not a fan of 'fake meat' style products, but the kids do love a wee sausage roll now and then. And the Greggs ones are better than the supermarket ones, so there is the occasional 'lazy tea' of Greggs sausage rolls, beans, and chips now and then... especially on Scouts nights!!

The stall was called “Gregory and Gregory” giving away little salads, sandwiches and pasties etc. the folks tasting the food (impressed by the quality) were shocked (some a little appalled!) when it was revealed that the stall was in fact Greggs.

I’d like to have seen some of their faces!
I dare say there were a few clutching their pearls in dismay at having enjoyed anything so plebeian!

You can buy Greggs' uncooked bakes and sausage rolls from Iceland. Very handy and tasty to have in for a lunchtime treat.

We have a Greggs which all but destroyed the other independent bakers/cafe's in the town.When Greggs arrived they sold bread and rolls and lots of lovely baked goods.At much lower prices than the locally owned and run bakers/cafes ,one by one they closed down and we dont have any bakeries left,no more hot rolls straight from the ovens at midnight no more well fired rolls...OK burnt, but they are always popular
here.
Now they have all closed Greggs has stopped selling the bread and rolls and you can only buy filled rolls or bread from the supermarket.Its very sad .A real loss to the community and a lesson learned,if its cheap it will come at a cost somewhere down the line

I’ll have to try their coffee although I haven’t thought a great deal of their motorway cafe but I’m fussy and like plenty og salad veg in sarnies.

I thank them so much for providing breakfast across Newcastle for primary school children. If it wasn’t for this many children would go without.

I think the competitive prices are probably down to Economy of Scale - they’ve the buying power to ensure best prices and their suppliers gain valuable, extended contracts. I know they have their own blend of very responsibly sourced coffee.
It’s obvious that there’s a lot of profit for some places (Costa and Starbucks) in beverages - but even my local garden centre charges over £7 for coffee x2. I wonder how many people pop in to Greggs for a drink, but also end up buying something to eat as well. I have seen people with lists, presumably for their office lunch breaks or whatever.
I think a lot of Gregg’s savory items are supplied part cooked and are finished off in-store? Perhaps that keeps the price down? I understand the steak bake is very popular with Durham Uni students.

I’ve never been a fan of Greggs and always thought it appealed to younger people - my kids all loved steak bakes when they were students. This was confirmed for me when 2 French boys with rucksacks approached me in Glasgow one day for directions - not to the Museum of Modern Art, the City Chambers, Princes Square or any other popular tourist spot; they wanted to know where the nearest Greggs was situated 😂

No need to apologise Primrose, you did exactly the right thing in the interests of everyone using the place. We all know the difference between milk turning (which is unlikely to happen in an establishment where so much is used that it would be bought in daily) and lack of proper cleaning.

Same kind of experience with me only two weeks ago. Had to nake across country to find a specific. Aftet driving then wandering about it wasmid afternoon and I was thirsty. Came upon a Greggs. Never had anything from them before. Went in, large coffee and a cheese slice for £3.85. Thought it was a mistake, too low, but no, right price. Sat down, had a lovely relaxing break before the journey home. How do they do it, some place take that price just for a coffee and the cheese slice was tasty.

My husband was a Baker and we watched greggs put many a small bakery out of business, now they don't even do bread any more!
And this was after the supermarkets had there bash at them. Now we have Artisan bread rather over priced and usually to be found in farm shops.

If the staff let the jug get into that state, LovelyLady, it’s obvious that they are not sufficiently aware of good food hygiene. What Primrose described isn’t down to milk ‘turning’, it’s down to lack of frequent cleaning. If the management were doing their job properly they would be teaching the staff about these things and carrying out regular inspections. If the jug’s like that, what’s going on behind the scenes? A visit from the environmental health department would be of far more use to the staff and their customers than a complaint to a member of staff. What’s all this ‘helping each other and being kind’? Would you say that if you had contracted a nasty bug due to poor food hygiene? Staff are paid to do a job and should do it properly.

Primrose 58. Honestly I just can’t see the point of reporting the milk jug. Just tell the staff. Why are we not supporting each other just tell the counter staff. Milk turns very quickly. We all know that.
We all have to work and if we were all reported to ‘the authorities’ life would be miserable. Let’s help each other and be kind.

It hadn’t “”just turned” it was so thick and congealed it looked like a yellowish plastic circle. it was horrid! I poked it with a spoon to make sure it wasn’t a plastic seal actually.

The shop was very busy and I would have had to go to the back of the queue to complain and I thought doing that would be even worse for them in front of customers.

I love a Greggs sausage roll with a Costa Coffee.

There are times when I struggle to choose independent over larger establishments now that they have to provide nutritional information. Greggs have improved their healthy options I see but the smell would always make resisting a sausage roll difficult so I have to avoid. I will relax and enjoy an ordinary coffee at an independent and okay yes possibly a bite to eat if I have someone to share the calories/fat/salt content with.

I’m with you Aldom. A cheese and onion pasty would be my go-to so a couple of years ago I tried one. Eurgh! I binned it. Sludge indeed in oily pastry.

Actually just checked and Thomas the Baker shops are now in. Cleveland, South and West Yorkshire also. Highly recommend if you come across one.

Around here in North Yorkshire we have a bakers called Thomas’s, they started in Helmsley but now have branches all over the area including York. Probably more expensive than Greggs but very good. Their award winning Yorkshire curd tarts especially. I have used Greggs the odd time but wasn’t keen.

I used to live in the north east where Greggs started and they used to be much better back in the early days. The cheese and onion pasties are like sludge now. They do excellent stotties in the north east but sadly not in the East Midlands where I live so I buy a few on my visits and freeze them. I think the food is ok value for money but very very fattening. I could spend £5 in a better way. On wool!!! Haha!!!

Normally I don't go into Greggs, but one day, not too long ago I missed the bus. I had thirty minutes to wait and felt hungry. Greggs is close to the bus stop. I popped in and bought a cheese and onion pastie. After the second bite I put the pastie in the bin.
I think it was mashed potato in oily pastry. No resemblance to cheese and onion. Absolutely vile. Never again.

A few weeks ago I met up with 4 friends in Asda cafe. We all had an over 60 deal so soup and a buttered roll and endless teas and coffee all for a pound a head. Best fiver I spent in a long while and the soup was delicious too. Don' t think the offer is still going but will certainly check out other deals in the future Just as I have during the school hols at various eateries. Think I must be getting savvy in my old age.

I like their vegetable slices. You can buy them frozen in iceland though
