I will go along with any of those. I am grateful for a quiet life without drama. Many are not so fortunate.

Sods law is when things go wrong that shouldn't. Surely the opposite is the law for things going right when all the probabilities are that it should go wrong.

For example DS was coming to France with us at Easter. On the morning we were travelling (on a 15.00 hour ferry). He went to fill his car with petrol and struggled back to the house with a misfiring engine, clearly not fit to travel. It was 10.00am. The probability of being able to get an AA man, a diagnosis, any necessary parts and repairs done by midday when we had to set off to catch the ferry were very low indeed.
BUT
DH, who knows a bit about cars, listened to the engine and looked and made a diagnosis. He went on line and found a local supplier with the necessary part in stock, which could be easily fitted and rushed off to get it.

The AA man arrived within 20 minutes and agreed with DH's diagnosis of the problem. and stayed for his return with the part, which he then fitted. By 11.30 he was off to his next call and we all set off for the ferry in our respective cars.

That is the opposite of Sods law. Possibly call it the Wonder law. because the impossible happens against all the odds.

I like the idea of looking out for what's good. We need more of that to balance the negative stuff.

Thank you to everyone who has posted - and Parsley3 you sum up what I had in mind. Life is light and shade - we cannot be always happy. But we can choose where we focus - what we look for, and that has a huge impact on our lives. You may have heard about the idea of keeping a gratitude diary - just three things a day you are grateful for. It makes a real difference to your wellbeing.

I wonder if my thread on the dishwasher breaking down prompted this, Applegran? You mentioned being grateful on that thread.

I am resolutely cheerful about stuff and posted with humour.

My mother always said I was 'too bl**dy Pollyanna' so my opposite of Sod's Law would be Pollyanna's law.

Discussing bad news is a step towards sorting what is bad and making it better if we intend to do make things better.

However if we are discussing bad news for thrills or for something to moan about then the gossip is bad for us.

If our intention when discussing good news is to keep
the judgement real and balanced then that is good. However if our intention is to avoid the bad news we need to balance our view as we should if possible be responsible adults.

I am still confused about what this thread is about.

Is it just about reliability? That most of the time everything goes well. Which is what one should expect from properly designed goods and services being operated in a broadly well governed country (that is not a political statement, just a statement that we have laws and legislation in this country,that is generally applied.

Or is the thread about Sods Law, the law that says: that if something can possibly go wrong, it will. Its opposite would surely be that if something goes wrong it will be possible to quickly put it right.

MOnica yes you have a good point. I didn't define sod's law and then set out to create it's opposite, so the original post is open to exactly the analysis you offer here. I really wanted to engage with the idea of looking for positives and gratitude in our lives more often - somehow words like 'sod's law' and 'isn't that just typical' and 'just my luck' all seem to focus on negatives. Our lives can be happier, I think, when we remain realistic but optimistic and ready to be grateful.

I think most of us are grateful for everything working. But like most things in life you only discuss the incidents that are uncommon - whether for good or ill -. A (positive) event like the incredibly fast repair of DS's car, mentioned up thread, was a cause for comment and we have discussed it among ourselves and recounted it to others. Similarly, when something goes badly wrong we discuss it because it is unusual.

In fact one could argue that the last thing we want to happen with all the ordinary things of life is for them to become the subject of discussion, because to do so they would have to become unreliable and untrustworthy.

There is a gran known to many of us who has an amazing granddaughter who suffers with scoliosis and has spent her young life in great pain and suffering many operations.
One day someone gave the little girl a set of Lego which contained a random pink flamingo. The little girl was so delighted by this find and it came to symbolise the idea that no matter how tough life is there is always a moment of wonder if we choose to see it.
That’s why some posters on the good morning thread sign off with a pink flamingo 🦩
My vote for finding something good would be ‘a flamingo moment’.
