Anyone else eat their supper on the sofa in front of the TV?

My DD was horrified when she discovered us eating our evening meal on the sofa whilst watching telly. “You always insisted we eat at the table! “ she said. Well we eat our breakfast and lunch at the table, but in the evening after a a day of childcare , gardening or general being out and about we just want to relax in front of the telly for a couple of hours. If we had company of course we wouldn’t do it, but we enjoy our relaxing evening - anyone else or are we just becoming slobs as we age?

As *Cossy said
*It’s our home, our retirement and frankly we do what we like!! Would never dream of doing this though with guests or family meal.

I wonder if empty chairs are less painful if you haven't always seated yourselves in the same places?

My husband and I don't have set places, never have done. Not in the kitchen, dining room or sitting room.

I have friends who have very specific places at the table and in the sitting room.

I'm just wondering.

Since living on my own I always eat my meals with my legs up on the sofa watching TV . Breakfast and lunch balanced on a cushion dinner on a tray . Only eat at the table if I have company for a meal and TV is off.

I find sitting at the dining table too lonely too. And also hard chairs hurt my back, so my preference is for a tray on my lap sitting in my armchair with a cushion behind me.
It's whatever suits us best individually, isn't it.

I’m with those who say it’s lonely sitting at a table by yourself.

Should say TV goes on when I have lunch until then I listen to classic FM from 5am until 1pm that's lunch time. I them sit and cross stitch watching TV. Do all housework and any shopping of a morning .

I don’t watch TV regularly, so no. I generally eat at the table, although I have breakfast in bed for or five times a week, and I read whilst eating, unless we have guests.

We eat at the table. Mostly. I think I would do so even if on my own. Mostly.

Lomo123 Wed 10-Apr-24 10:32:00

Yes when I'm on my own. If I have family or visitors it's the table.

As far as I am concerned, it is no-ones business but your own how and where you eat your meals as long as you enjoy them. If you cannot do what you want when you want as you get older then what is the point of living. We all have our own little ways of doing things so leave us to it and do what you want when you want.

Me too!

I agree.
If anyone else is here, we sit at the table to eat. Otherwise, it is a tray and a comfy chair in front of the TV. DH watched endless antiques programmes, but found watching the TV on the wall in the kitchen hurt his neck so a few years ago we transferred to eating in our comfy chairs. I still do, as the TV is company.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 10-Apr-24 10:46:06

I guess we are a creatures of habit as when DH is out I still lay the table/island for me and when I am out DH will do the same.

I find eating sitting on the sofa uncomfortable and I get indigestion so always sit at the table.
I'm a widow and personally don't see how it is more lonely sitting at the table on your own than sitting on the sofa on your own.

Joseann

No, too much dog interference.

With three dogs they use pack tactics - two will distract you on one side whilst the third steals off your plate on the other side 😡

When the children were still at home we always sat at the table and my son and his family always do. It was a time to chat, share and be together as a family
But times change and now if it's just us we often sit on the sofa in front of the TV, but never if anyone else is here

I use a lap tray in front of the TV , I like to watch TV while eating, nothing to do with others what goes on in your own home.

From the South, call the evening meal dinner. I know its odd but the word supper makes me cringe especially when used to describe dinner or tea.

Guilty as charged !

Franbern Wed 10-Apr-24 11:37:45

If anyone else is with me when eating a meal, we sit at the table and no tv is on.
However, my wonderful riser/recliner chair is by far the most comfortable place for me to sit, opposite the tv. So, when by myself, which is most of the time, that is where I have my meals. Alongside it I use a trolley with a tray so that can be wheeled in from the kitchen with my food on that . Trolley sits side of chair and tray is on my lap. I enjoy all my meals that way and watch my choice of tv (recorded programmes0 at the same time. If any of my children did not like that, think they would know better than to make a comment.

We always ate at a table when the family was growing up but I’ve lost the battle and DH and DD (adult) insist on eating in front of the tv. I suppose I could always go and eat on my own? We will eat at the table tonight as we are having Chinese take away.

Louella12 Wed 10-Apr-24 12:03:11

Christmas Day is the only day we eat at the table.

Blinko Wed 10-Apr-24 12:05:03

Only if it's biscuits and cocoa. That what supper consists of in this house.

Calendargirl Wed 10-Apr-24 13:19:11

We eat all our meals at the dining room table, but our evening mug of cocoa is in front of the tv.

Purplepixie Wed 10-Apr-24 13:22:21

Yes, yes and more yes! Once my youngest son left home then we started to do this and I love it. We have breakfast and lunch at the dinner table and sometime a large tea. If we have company then we all eat at the table but when there is just the two of us then why not? It’s up to the individual and what makes them happy.

Tink75 Wed 10-Apr-24 13:24:27

Yes now living alone can't see the empty chair at the table then!
