Anyone else eat their supper on the sofa in front of the TV?

My DD was horrified when she discovered us eating our evening meal on the sofa whilst watching telly. “You always insisted we eat at the table! “ she said. Well we eat our breakfast and lunch at the table, but in the evening after a a day of childcare , gardening or general being out and about we just want to relax in front of the telly for a couple of hours. If we had company of course we wouldn’t do it, but we enjoy our relaxing evening - anyone else or are we just becoming slobs as we age?

Mostly no - occasionally might have a sandwich in front of the tv, but generally have my meals at the table as I find it more comfortable. However, if you find it comfortable then why not when it’s just the two of you?

We always have dinner at the kitchen table. But we have an open plan kitchen /diner/ living area and can eat at the table and watch tv .
If we’re having a cooked breakfast , we’ll eat at the table .
Otherwise if it’s toast or cereal , we’ll eat on the sofas watching the morning news .
Similarly if lunch is a sandwich it’s eaten on the sofa .
I’m not at the stage of empty chairs yet and my mum started eating meals on my dads recliner chair after he died .
We’ve always had labs , so you have an audience when eating on the sofa .
But each to their own.

As a child, supper by the fire was a great treat. My father had a weekly newspaper and Ftiday night was when it was printed so he didn't come home until.very late. Mum and I would have the things WE liked- often seafood or something slightly more exotic than our daily fare which added to the feeling of a "treat". We didn't have TV but would listen to Friday Night is Music Night or a radio drama.
Somehow that sensation has stuck with me and I still find it self indulgent a treat at the end of a hard day!
As a family though we always ate at the table.

In the past, I so enjoyed the whole family around the table, exchanging news etc. I do miss it. Now widowed, I still eat at the table, but always have an interesting non fiction book propped up so don’t feel alone although the phrase “He ate alone, like a dog” I read somewhere often comes to mind.

My kitchen is always cold so I always eat with a tray on my lap in the lounge..

We do.

Breakfast and lunch is at the table, but dinner I sit in my chair in the living room and watch the news. DH tends to eat later than me, so he joins me about 30 minutes later.

We eat all our meals at the dining table, its habit I suppose.
Eating while sitting on the sofa sounds as if it might give me indigestion.

Yes, we eat on the sofa in front of the telly

Hyacinth384 Fri 12-Apr-24 11:34:18

We have breakfast, dinner and tea on the sofa.
There’s just the two of us so no one else’s business really

not trays but on folding tables, yes with the TV on and if I am alone, with a book as well.

Yes, always. For the simple reason that we do not have a dinner table. When the last one got too shabby and got thrown out together with the chairs, we had intended to replace it. But then that space was taken over by the cats as their play area. Now there is no room anywhere else.

With you all the way, vegansrock. We only have one tv which is in the lounge and very, very, very rarely is it turned on before 5pm at earliest. We eat dinner between 6 and 6.30pm so usually watching the news. And like you always in dining room if we have any company. Breakfast and lunch in the kitchen. This is all since family left and we are now in our 'dotage' grin Why not!

Morning tea and toast I eat sitting on sofa and watch morning news, the back french doors are open and the dogs wander in and out and all the bird song and feeding is going on so much more pleasant than sitting at a quiet lonely table in the kitchen. Later on in the day about 7p.m. I have evening dinner which I have on the sofa watching T.V . The dining table which is in large kitchen diner is only used at larger holidays Christmas and Easter or long weekend when family are visiting. Mostly there are art and craft stuff over the table and other odds and ends.

I live on my own , a widow. I eat every meal at the table and cook them all from scratch, I even set the table for breakfast the night before as I did when we the give of us were living at home.

AuntyTrouble Fri 12-Apr-24 11:59:45

Always…yes when my daughter was a child we ate at the table but now I’m on my own I’d rather watch tv whilst eating. When I have company that’s different and I make it special with napkins etc. You do what makes you happy, I’m sure DD does.

Supergran1946 Fri 12-Apr-24 12:04:06

Yes we do. We are always very active during the day, then when we get home from our jaunts I cook a meal, put the 6pm news on and eat our dinner whilst we watch. Used to feel guilty about doing it as I drummed into my daughter that meals should be eaten at the table, but at the ripe old age of 77 I now couldn’t care less 😂😂

Oreo Fri 12-Apr-24 12:06:27

If we’re on our own we sit with a tray, sometimes watching tv sometimes just chatting.I do shifts at work, all kinds of odd times so sometimes eat alone.
When the family come round we eat at the table together.
There’s no right or wrong way, it’s what suits you and your lifestyle.

Witzend Fri 12-Apr-24 12:07:36

Why would it give you indigestion, J52? Purely because you would be appalled at the mere idea? (That is, if you would be.)

Cambia Fri 12-Apr-24 12:08:31

We call it dinner, have a glass of wine and eat at the coffee table in the sitting room watching tv! We have a wood burner and it is so cosy. Eat in the kitchen during the day. Can’t imagine wine in there, it’s always tea!!

Oreo Fri 12-Apr-24 12:08:53

Bending over a tray can give you indigestion unfortunately.

welbeck Fri 12-Apr-24 12:26:34

it can be arranged on a cushion to get the best posture.
i am from the south, and i just call it food, or something to eat.
i rarely use the word meal either, suggests to me of canteens, catering signs.
dinner to me suggests a grand feast, or special occasion, eating out, if in the evening.

lovesreading Fri 12-Apr-24 12:27:06

Absolutely, we very rarely eat at the table, in fact I can't remember the last time we did. The dogs know to leave well alone, and it suits us so that's what we do.

sazz1 Fri 12-Apr-24 12:30:00

I do occasionally when we're on our own.

sweetcakes Fri 12-Apr-24 12:30:56

Yep every single day at dinner time
On our laps. Tea for me is in the afternoon tea and cake. I don't partake in supper I like to leave 12 hours between dinner and breakfast.

Fae1 Fri 12-Apr-24 12:31:56

Eating tends to be a social occasion so when I have company it's always a meal at a table. As I live alone however, I find the TV a good companion at the sofa bistro.
