Sentimental items- can you bring yourself to get rid of them?

As I am preparing for the decorator, I have sorted out quite a few things for the charity shop, but some are really difficult.
One item is a plate decorated by my first grandchild at nursery. To be honest, I have no real attachment to it, but how can I possibly part with it? Especially when it says To Granny and Grandad though obviously the child did not write that, their contribution was a hand print. I can hardly send it to a charity shop, as nobody would buy it. I have packed it with the rest of my crockery for now, but I probably won’t put it back in the cupboard when I unpack.

The other item is, very reluctantly, also going to go in the bin. It is a china mug, a lovely pattern, a perfect shape, but now has two tiny chips, though not where you drink from. It was given to me by one of my loveliest pupils when she left school. She lived near me and I used to babysit her when she was younger, so I knew her from 5 - 18, but lost touch after that.

What do you find hard to get rid of, for sentimental reasons?

I’ve just downsized from a 3 bedroom house to a bungalow and it was only when I packed up I realised just how much clutter I had. I bought some boxes and in each box I chose one each for my sons and my grandchildren with the names on the front and any keepsakes went into them from whoever made or sent them and put them in the attic.so when I climb my final staircase when my sons have to empty my house they will find them and probably have a laugh that I kept them and then they can do whatever they want to do with them. Everything else went to charity shops if I didn’t sell and trust me the min you hand them over you won’t feel guilty for long

I have so much stuff, going back years. Photos, some belonged to my mum and she's been gone 50 years now.I have hundreds of photos,45 singles,LP's. Videos,Cd's. All my diaries from when I was 15.Letters that I wrote to my then boyfriend when he was serving in Northern Ireland in the early 70's and all the one's he sent to me. Birthday cards. A glass cabinet with beautiful glasses in. Some belonged to my parents and a lot are mine. I do use some of them on special occasions but do 2 people really need so many glasses. Of course they don't and I know that when I die my boys will probably just shake their heads and say, look at all the stuff mum hung on to and throw it away. My poor hub but I'm sure he's as bad as me with all the stuff he keeps too

...I kept a wooden spoon she’d had for ever - it was worn right down on one side.

Witzend I have my Grandma's silver tablespoon that she used for scraping the bowl when she was baking.

My tired old plastic lettuce shaker which I never use now reminds me of a nice old fashioned ironmongers shop that used to exist. Do you remember ironmongers shops.? They used to smell of paraffin and rope.
