Nicknames

I'm in two minds about nicknames because it can lead to teasing. However, some of the ones rearranging letters in actual names and word associations are quite witty.

There were some very witty ones on the Twitter thread. My DGS once complained that he didn't have a nickname and his pal did. Of course you can't make one up yourself!

I would suggest it all depends on if they are derogatory. It is more than likely the ones on such a thread are fictitious and therefore funny

I’m glad I was not given one I didn’t want, hard to shake off, Its bad enough ignorant people immediately shortening my name.

My brother was called 'Milky' or 'Milks' by his friends. When young with his blond hair and NHS specs he looked very like the Milky Bar Kid. We even have a photo of him with his cowboy outfit and toy gun. Fortunately our nicknames only lasted a few years. As we got posted around we left them behind.

I work in an industry that was originally very male based, when I first started in the 80's most of the men had nicknames, in fact I never knew some of them by their real names! It wasn't until I did payroll for a while that I learned their names.

Some of them were Sly, Woody, Jumped (longer version Johnny Jumped Up), Boyo, Whitey (he was very blonde).

I often hoped I didn't have a nickname that I didn't know about.

My friend’s DH often employed a chap to build brick wall bases. I never knew his real name, he was always called Hadrian!

One of the Twitter ones was 'Photo Finish' for a man who leaned forward when he walked.

I was Maggot for years. It was just a corruption of my first name and used by all my best friends, but new members of our group were horrified by it. Only two people still use it.

Now I’m reading Demon Copperhead and I was tickled to see that it’s the nickname given to Matt Peggott - and again, people not in the know think it’s an insult.

Our son in law (mid 40’s) had a mate known as ‘Noodles’. Curious me asked why so? Turned out as a lad at school he had curly blond hair. Made me chuckle.

I worked on a factory floor for years and some of the nicknames were hilarious, but not for the faint hearted!
One that was terrible but funny was an E Kerr was known as “juan”.

I was called Hedgehog at infants and juniors, it ended at seniors, it was a play on my surname, I didn’t mind. We have a friend whose surname is Marks, his nickname for years has been Skid.

I knew Tony Carpet, because he was a carpet fitter.

My girl had a friend called burger, because the back of his neck looked like a,burger in a bun.

Just remembered being told about a Welsh policeman known to all as 'Dai Book and Pencil'. Maybe to differentiate between several Dais?

I was called Foxy during my schooldays. It was a play on my then surname. Nobody else calls me that so it's quite funny when I bump into my old classmates when out and about.
At home, as a small child, I was called Spitfire due to my volatile temper. I'm quite a calm person now....I think.

DD has a friend who's always referred to as Foxy but I somehow doubt that's you fiorentina!
