But then this kind of behavior has happened at Royal Ascot within sight of the late Queen.

A couple of glasses of cheap champagne and some of the blokes regress to their Caveman origins.

I grew up within 10 minutes walk of Aintree racecourse and we often went for walks there at weekends (when there was no racing). I have no interest in either sport or gambling so I never became a racegoer. However I was an extra for the film Champions which was filmed at Aintree.

My mum used to say fur coat no drawers. Obviously meaning all show and no substance but I have heard it applied to red hat too.

Would I wear luminous socks with red shoes? Yes, anything to annoy people who think it is their business to comment on what other people wear.

I'm off out ......

Callistemon21 Tue 16-Apr-24 10:21:30

SHOES!!!

Callistemon21 Tue 16-Apr-24 10:21:04

My mum's dictum was 'fur coat and no knickers'.

That was another one of DH's Grandmother.
It meant someone who showed off but really had nothing to boast about.

I wish I'd never mentioned the red shoes.

There is nothing wrong with red shoes. I've got red shows!!!

My mum's dictum was 'fur coat and no knickers'. She evidently had no beef about red shoes as she allowed me to have them for my first pair of heels. Little heels, in 1954, of course. I don't have any red shoes at the moment as I gave my red loafers to a charity shop just last year when they became too tight, but this has given me an idea: I'm sure I have seen some red trainers that look delightfully comfortable.

I know someone who did ๐Ÿ˜
Her sister was embarrassed and said she was common.
That was the point many posts ago.

There was a film called The Red Shoes years ago. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think not.

Everyone's missing my point about red shoes.

Red shoes are fine, but worn with bright pink, green or yellow luminous socks? Would you?

No, no and neverโ€ฆ

When I was a child there was a saying โ€˜Red hat, no knickersโ€™. Iโ€™ve never forgotten it and never had a red hat! I have red shoes though.

I wore a navy and white outfit to a wedding with smart red bag, shoes and hat.

DH's Gran said "Red hat, no drawers" and I never wore the hat again!

I adore my car to bar red shoes

Just saying.

For my registry office second wedding I chose a white silk blouse with designer skirt and jacket. A red hat and red shoes. A man outside the registry office commented on my elegant look. A lady serving in John Lewis told me she used to be a nurse and red and white meant death. Cheer me up do. I chose a pink bouquet to break the red and white. The shoe salesman said he always found red shoes to be tarty but liked the ones I chose. Me too. They werenโ€™t bright red and were a beautiful soft leather.

As a young woman I thought common was when you showed too much leg and too much breast at the same time ๐Ÿ˜‚. I was always taught one or the other never both. Not sure it applies today!!

MissAdventure Mon 15-Apr-24 17:52:21

Very much like the manager, sitting astride a dead racehorse for a photo of himself doing the v for victory sign.

Ilovedogs22 Mon 15-Apr-24 17:47:34

I have noticed a gradual decline in certain stratas of society over the last 15 or so years. People such as so-called reality stars have set the bar for standards very, very low,& unfortunately people try to copy them, in speech, dress and behaviour. Some of the people you refer to simply have no class, it's an epidemic alas! ๐Ÿค”

Sweetsnbooksnradio4 Mon 15-Apr-24 16:34:34

The people can behave as daft as they like (or as the course security will allow) but I was delighted to see that the big race ended without any death or injuries to the horses.
Some idiot said that the โ€˜thrillโ€™ had gone out of the race, but what sort of person gets a thrill out of a lovely, trusting animal lying dead on a race courseโ€ฆ

..

....... or one's imagination certainly doesn't want to go there!!

Barbadosbelle Mon 15-Apr-24 14:49:42

..

I don't know about red shoes but I've never worn white stilettos (or boots) as my dear Nana told us that "only brides or prostitutes wear white footwear"!!

Don't know how she knew but she was, literally, a Lady (with a capital L!!) and maybe the William Hanson of her time!!

..

charliebb Mon 15-Apr-24 14:14:56

Ladies Day, not really ladies most of them. Just there to drink and wear clothes that don't leave much to the imagination!
