If you live in a bungalow….

I live in a house and sleep on the 1st floor. I always check that all downstairs windows are closed and the three outer doors locked before going to bed at night.

In warm weather I have often left upstairs windows open at night and if we get hot weather this summer, I shall probably do so again, even although I am now alone.

I have once or twice forgotten to lock the back door at night, and no harm has come of it, but I find it more sensible to lock it.

I live in a bungalow (built 1880s and not that damp!) and when it's very hot I do sleep with the window open, but I don't really like doing so - and can only do it because we are in a very safe area.

Our bungalow was built in the early 1930’s. Quite a few we viewed on this estate, before buying this one , had a rainbow of damp across a wall or two. We are on top of a hill, the highest point between North London and York. We like fresh air.

I live in a bungalow that backs onto fields so I have locks on the window, that allows the window to be safely locked and open a few inches. I also have purpose built mosquito nets on the windows so when open, stops bugs and creepy crawlies climbing in. I did install air conditioning a few years ago in February, when it was snowing and everyone laughed at me. (There was an offer with a local contractor) Now when it gets really hot, the entire family descend on my little bungalow for the day and one of my children actually comes home and sleeps in my spare room as their house is too hot.

We do, our bedrooms are on the back, we have the small window open, we never close it.

We have trickle vents which are always open and the type of windows that can be locked in a slightly open position. We don’t have the small quarter light type at the tops.

Each bedroom window has wooden Venetian blind. At our request the installer attached a sort of prong which goes into a fitment screwed to the wall. Should the window be opened wide at night the blind is held down. Not enough to keep a determined intruder out I guess but anyone trying would make a heck of a noise.

Regarding damp, no sign of it in our bungalow. It was built in 1987 and we’ve been here for 11 years. .

Only in really hot weather. I open them during the day of course, but don't feel safe at night.

If your friend was concerned perhaps a window lock for a child would help her.

I will report back to a friend with mobility issues, who insists she couldn’t possibly live on the ground floor because she couldn’t have a window open at night.

I live in a bungalow now but even when I lived in a house when my husband was alive I never sleep with windows opened. I don't even like windows open during the hottest day during the summer.

I don't like insects getting in home especially winged ones. My husband insisted one very hot summer's night having the window open a little bit. Next thing I know he woke me up he could hear a buzzing in this ear. I put tepid water into his ear until there was no buzzing. He went to A&E the next day and ear,nose and mouth doctor removed the fly. Said I did the right thing using tepid water as cold or hot would have damaged my husband's ear drum.

I always make sure my hair is over my ears and duvet as well . I sleep on my side.

We have a brilliant system on our downstairs windows where we have a bedroom in France. Electric roll down shutters mean we can leave our windows and French doors wide open for air to circulate at night, and when we go out in the day too.

They were probably all built by the same bulder, who didn't make sure that the damp-proof courses were really damp-proof.

Yes, when we designed the bedroom extension, we incorporated a small window which could safely be left open, and as the windows are fairly new, they all have trickle vents. Incidentally, bungalows are no more prone to damp than any other type of property!

From about April to October, we sleep with the small top window open.

Not in the winter months, but have the dehumidifier running overnight.

The top windows open for most of the day all year.

I've owned 4 bungalows and in one now... and never had any damp or mould in any of them, so also puzzled by the remark. All were/are insulated, vented, heated in winter, no drying of wet clothes inside...nor shut up for weeks at a time.

In hot weather I open the small top openers in each room and use a fan to distribute/move the air inside, works for me.

We have out locks onto our bedroom windows so that they can be opened part way but not enough for anyone to get in. The other windows are newer and can be locked cracked open, and have vents built in. I do like the air to circulate so this works well.

We currently live in a bungalow, the second one we have owned and we have never experienced any damp patches joannapiano so I am puzzled about your statement.

However, we do sleep with a small window open as our bedroom is at the rear of the bungalow and the back garden is fenced all around, my only concern would be cats - hate those creatures!

Yes but I have a Jack Russell who would create a racket if anyone tried to climb in.

Yes we do. We have sash windows with locks on that only open so far. Originally we were thinking of having screens of some kind fitted incase someone threw something in or an animal climbed in during the night but so far this has never happened!

I have french windows in my bedroom so, no, I don't sleep with them open.

My flat is so, so hot in the summer that I'm willing to fight a skinny intruder that could fit through my window.

Screens on the windows could be a consideration.
