DH and I refer to his unmentionables as ‘undercrackers’. It set me off thinking what slang you use and why…

In the north east plimsolls are called sand shoes or sannies for short.

grannybuy Wed 17-Apr-24 17:21:50

Our plimsolls were ‘ jimmies ‘ ie gym shoes.

My daughter knew a Scot who called his trousers "winners and losers" (troosers)

TwinLolly Wed 17-Apr-24 15:04:25

Sandshoes when I was growing up, and takkies
for plimsolls/running shoes/trainers. I had no idea what trainers were as it was a new word for me!

When my nan used to sit down we could see her 'bloomers'
Sometimes pink, sometimes light blue. I think they were elasticated just above her knees.
We use to call them her 'apple gatherers'

A dressing gown is always a "dee-gee”

Ktsmum Wed 17-Apr-24 13:11:07

Big pants, Harvest Festivals,- all safely gathered in 😅

Mamma66 Wed 17-Apr-24 13:00:12

Blooming autocorrect! Tighty whities.

Mamma66 Wed 17-Apr-24 12:59:25

There are some beauts! I particularly like grundies, harvest festivals (a new one on me) and righty whities 😂

We have never had a family name for pants but my mother's favourite for a bra was " an over the shoulder bolder holder " ! Still makes me smile now ☺️

sandye Wed 17-Apr-24 12:45:25

Bra's are always Double Decker Wobble Checkers.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 17-Apr-24 12:41:21

In the professional dance group I belonged to in my young days, we referred to our bras as Herkules - named after the floating crane in the harbour of Copenhagen, as it lifted things up!

GardenofEngland Wed 17-Apr-24 12:38:01

When my daughters were teens they always asked me to get them femiokes for their monthlies! Not sure the tv reporter Femo Oki at that time would have approved. Funny I did see her on a world TV channel in a hotel in Spain recently..

When the children were small, they called a dressing gown a "towel" as their father's was made of towelling.

My Dad called a cardigan a ‘gansy’. I believe it’s a fishing term. He never fished, but he was in the Navy. 😎
My husband calls underpants underriders or keckaroonies.😂

I think that might be a shortening of Guernsey

In Edinburgh we called gym shoes “ rubbers “ and when I was in Ellon ( Aberdeenshire) it was “sand shoes”. As well as clothes, down south I used to confuse neighbours with “ the bucket man “ to them it was binmen and going my messages, to them shopping.

Where I came from (London/Essex border) pumps were, how can I put this politely, bottom burps.
