DH and I refer to his unmentionables as ‘undercrackers’. It set me off thinking what slang you use and why…

Yes, we always said "pumps " in Manchester.

I used to love the comedy programme 'Goodness Gracious Me' and they introduced the word chuddies (I assume it was spelt like that) meaning pants. Back in the day blazers were often referred to as bum freezers and of course there is a wealth of Cockney rhyming slang words for clothes eg. whistle (suit), turtles (gloves), tile (hat), daisies (boots) and dicky (shirt) to name a few. Back in the 1960s open toed sandals were called Jesus boots.

When I was very small (just starting school at 4) I didn't realise that not everyone knew what a titfer was! I also told my teacher that I had been "Tom and Dick" at home, and had to explain to her what it meant (she lived in Barnet and had no idea!)

I still slip into my parents' language occasionally even now and say "frock" to my DGD - she just looks totally confused grin

😁
We all said titfer ( tit for tat, hat) and various other Cockney slang like let’s have a butchers ( butchers hook, look).
Dad called his underwear ‘unmentionables’.

In Edinburgh we called gym shoes “ rubbers “ and when I was in Ellon ( Aberdeenshire) it was “sand shoes”. As well as clothes, down south I used to confuse neighbours with “ the bucket man “ to them it was binmen and going my messages, to them shopping.

My Dad called a cardigan a ‘gansy’. I believe it’s a fishing term. He never fished, but he was in the Navy. 😎
My husband calls underpants underriders or keckaroonies.😂

I think that might be a shortening of Guernsey

When the children were small, they called a dressing gown a "towel" as their father's was made of towelling.

When my daughters were teens they always asked me to get them femiokes for their monthlies! Not sure the tv reporter Femo Oki at that time would have approved. Funny I did see her on a world TV channel in a hotel in Spain recently..

In the professional dance group I belonged to in my young days, we referred to our bras as Herkules - named after the floating crane in the harbour of Copenhagen, as it lifted things up!

Gangan2 Wed 17-Apr-24 12:52:19

We have never had a family name for pants but my mother's favourite for a bra was " an over the shoulder bolder holder " ! Still makes me smile now ☺️

When my nan used to sit down we could see her 'bloomers'
Sometimes pink, sometimes light blue. I think they were elasticated just above her knees.
We use to call them her 'apple gatherers'
