If I had to choose.....just one day

Just that. Nat king Cole came on my play list just now singing that song and I've always known which day I would choose. The day I met my future husband. What day would you choose?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 17-Apr-24 16:35:03

Yes, it’s no good going back as that person who would not act differently.

There was one day when I could have taken a different road, too. I would like to go back to that day. My life could have been very different.

I agree there GSM but I would need to go back knowing what I now know…. And sadly that would never happen I’d probably be the slightly emotionally silly girl I was then…!

Urmstongran and jenpax - I too have made some terrible decisions that have altered the course of life. However, we all made our decisions based on what we knew at the time, and thought that what we each chose was the best way to go. I have finally managed to let go of the rage, guilt, and every negative emotion associated with that time, as I refuse to let it destroy any more of my life. I hope you both have managed the same. Hindsight is one very powerful tool.

Oh my goodness, reading everyone’s thoughts of a day they would like to re-live for one reason or another is a real roller coaster of emotions. I am fortunate enough not to have personally endured such heartache as some of you have, nor have I experienced a time in my life of such happiness or ecstasy. Perhaps such things are yet to visit me and I can find strength to endure the bad times and embrace any good ones, I wish the same for everyone.

A seemingly ordinary day, a few years ago, when I sat in a beautiful garden in warm sunshine, watching my children, grandchildren and dogs messing about playing cricket, chasing each other, laughing,. I remember thinking that life could not be any better than this - everyone I loved was there, and happy.

The day before my granddaughter passed away, I'd have held her just that little bit longer if I'd known it'd be the last time.. Though maybe seeing her on the day may have changed the course of events and she'd still be here

To Murraymints ( love the name lol)
GREAT PERSPECTIVE. Thankyou xx.

Polly7 Wed 17-Apr-24 13:26:15

😢 so saddened by the regrets. Empath territory. Iv got a few too. When I catch myself going into them I sing the line 🎼 'I did it my way' 😁
When I'm struggling I think to myself. "could be better could be worse "
If helps one person it's worth saying lol
🤔some of those regrets we have may look like the better option now but we dont know for sure!?🤷‍♀️. The financial one I DO get. It's a floating one that's always with you

My best day ever is hearing " it's gone " after the second time of having cancer, then seeing the joy on my family's. faces when they were told the news.

A major regret in my life caused us a huge financial loss. ‘The road not taken. I so wish I could go back to that day and make a phone call - instead of letting my hubris taking over and assuming things would work out fine and dandy.
😢

I also have 2 other major regrets but we are where we are so it’s best not to dwell on them. I’ve drawn a line in the sand. I’ve had to for self preservation.

Strange how this line of thinking has influenced my answer. I’ve many happy memories. But my ‘one day’ would be to mitigate great sadness in my life.

Its the same for me. I have major regrets of decisions that now leave me in an awful position.

Glass half full, glass half empty. This thread is half full of happiness and pride and the other glass is half empty of profound sadness and regret. Days, events these women will never forget.

Life is never an abundance of joy and luck, but it is never so devastating that we can’t find happiness and fulfillment. Everyone’s journey is so personal.

What an interesting question that evokes and reveals such memories.

Mine would be telling my son he was still grounded instead of letting him go out with his mates and losing his life in a car crash

To have one day with my late husband, to go a walk, call at the local pub for a drink, just an ordinary day, I still miss him as much, everyone thinks after a couple of years you’re over it.

I know exactly what you mean for me it would be a chance to say all the things I would have liked him to know or be sure of.

To have those last few hours with my mother again 💔

I have stopped her

I am so sorry to hear about your loss, I cannot imagine your pain. It makes my 'regrets' seem very trivial. Sending you 🫂 and 💐.

Granny Somerset you’ve put it so well.. it’s exactly how and what I feel and think. Why oh why was I so brainless…. And now it’s too late to be wise

being present at the birth of my granddaughter it felt like my heart just exploded with love, such a privilege!

Nannan2 Wed 17-Apr-24 12:15:22

If i could'nt have that one then i'd have the one we all last met up as a whole family for one of my granddaughters birthday- and then change the minor event which eventually caused the huge rift between one of my daughters & her eldest brother and caused them to not speak to or see each other for about 7 years since.

undines Wed 17-Apr-24 12:13:33

My heart goes out to all of you who have regrets and sad memories, and also those who want just one simple day again, with a loved one. I would like to go back to my wedding day. Quite recent, in 2018, but it was a wonderful day, great big reception in a barn, dancing, everyone relaxed - and there was magic in the air.

Mistyfluff8 Wed 17-Apr-24 12:10:12

Regret marrying into his family who were so old fashioned and rude about women There attitude to the house brought up to sit and wait for his food not taught to do anything in the house Didn’t save for a house just gambled the money brought up with no responsibility My mother was a Dane and she was curious she was so up to date in the world

Nannan2 Wed 17-Apr-24 12:03:45

The one when it was before i had to set off for a weekend away when my mum took ill (she had already had a home visit from dr) she insisted i still go as g.p. said she would be fine.I would then cancel the trip, take her to hospital to get properly fully checked out intead..That was last time i saw her alive, a heart attack claimed her in early hours of the monday morning. That g.p.should have been struck off. It was also the weekend my friend rang to say her brother had been rushed to hospital. After a few days he died too.He was 39.I could have told her ahead of time so he could have got earlier treatment at least.

Oh Allsorts I believe you’d never get over it. 💐
Just learn to navigate it as best as, I suppose?

You “ get over” a bad cold or an illness!!! , I never want to “get over” losing my other half, the love of my life!! That’s not to say I am unhappy, I miss him, and our life together, so much every day, in every way, but I am keeping my promise to him that I will be ok, I will be as happy as possible, look after myself and try to continue to live a good purposeful life. To have just one day, I would go back to the day we first met, I knew then we would be together forever!

Christmas Eve 2001. We had all the kids at home that year (step children we’re usually at their mothers)

We’d watched a film, had a takeaway and all the kids were in bed asleep. I remember feeling grateful that I had 2 weeks off work and we finally had all the kids at home for Xmas day.

I drifted off to sleep smiling and very very happy 😊

The day(s) I spent naked in the Camargue entwined with a long, dark haired, genuine French gypsy (Gitan).
