So a customer asked on a fish counter in a local supermarket near me for a whole tuna! A whole tuna! They're huge. Has anyone else heard anything this silly

You wont find beef sausages much in supermarkets these days, nor tomato ones, but a local butchers usually have a good range of flavours.

Nannan2 Sat 27-Apr-24 00:34:01

No Georgesgran- it is not a 'Northern thing' -some of us are able to use correct grammar 😐😆

welbeck Sat 27-Apr-24 00:03:58

by the way, does anyone know why i can't find beef sausages in the supermarket.
wanted them for a friend, i don't eat meat.
i'm sure i heard of them when i was younger.

welbeck Fri 26-Apr-24 23:59:22

what's funny about beef chops ?

V3ra Fri 26-Apr-24 23:51:09

henetha you weren't alone, apparently my Dad asked my Mum why they had pork chops, and lamb chops, but never beef chops 🤦

henetha Fri 26-Apr-24 23:30:27

Years ago there was a newly married young woman who went into the local butchers and asked for two beef chops.
The butcher tried not to laugh as he explained the problem.
I was the young housewife. 😊

I worked in a bank when I was younger, and we would get American customers from cruise ship in a few times a month. They were just in town for the day, so would come in when the bank opened, get some Canadian cash then come back later in the day to bring back whatever they hadn't spent to change it back into American.

Oh dear, the conversations we had! I can't remember the exchange rate at the time, but the US dollar was worth more than CDN. So yippee, in the morning they would get $1.20 for every dollar of theirs, but somehow at the end of the day they wanted more, since their dollar was 'worth more'. Plus we couldn't exhange the coins. There were a lot of confused and unhappy customers.

On the other hand, I did once see a whole swordfish in a wheelbarrow in the market in Narbonne.

I often buy a whole Salmon, the bigger the better, sometimes get it filleted at fish counter or do it myself. Cheaper than buying individual fillets which I can cut to what ever size I want.

And you should never drink cappuccino in Italy after breakfast,

Georgesgran Fri 19-Apr-24 20:35:20

Oh dear - that was supposed to be a funny story - in fact, in real time, it was. The ‘advert’
was on a very small social website and I must defend my late DH who was in no way ever rude or superior!!
In actual fact, we loaned the advertiser our trailer and the borrower saw the funny side of it.

I’m off this thread.

Theexwife Fri 19-Apr-24 20:19:34

Before he laughs and points out my mistake it should read ‘a dick’.

Theexwife Fri 19-Apr-24 20:18:12

I would rather speak to someone who didn't know the difference between lend and borrow than a rude patronising person.

I know somebody like that , always putting others down to make himself feel superior, just sounds like dick to me.

Deedaa Fri 19-Apr-24 20:10:33

dotpocka How on earth could a cappuccino take 25 minutes to prepare? 5 minutes max with a moka pot on the stove and slightly less with an espresso machine. You will only find cinnamon sprinkled on it in tourist areas and it certainly doesn't grow in Italy. Get away from the tourist centres and there are plenty of bars where you won't even get chocolate on it.

Georgesgran Fri 19-Apr-24 16:44:04

Well that’s me told!

Elrel Fri 19-Apr-24 15:01:39

Georgesgran
Sadly not everyone in the North, or even the South, of this country has the same level of education. We also don’t all wallow in superiority at others’ mistakes.

Georgesgran Fri 19-Apr-24 14:51:37

Years ago, someone on DH’s Club Group posted ‘can I lend a trailer for the weekend?’ We knew he meant borrow not lend, but DH tagged him along for quite a while about taking him up on his kind off flyer and where to collect the trailer, etc until he eventually explained the difference between lend and borrow!
DD2’s reply at work when someone used to say ‘can I lend a pencil’ is ‘no, thanks I’ve already got one’.

Is this lend thing a Northern expression?

Gwyllt Fri 19-Apr-24 14:03:03

I might add it probably weighed about 2-3 kilo

Probably about twenty years ago I bought o whole tuna ( or that is what I was told it was ) off a barrow in London
Baked it in the oven with skin on.
It was disgusting it tasted like cod liver oil

Some customers answers to questions can be daft too. I went to a cafe and asked if the eggs they used are free range. Answer was yes it has printed on the box they are from caged birds so they are free range!

Sago

I hate FB and am only a member for local information.
I stupidly joined a group for the cruise ship we join on Saturday.
The questions people ask are astonishing.
One was “can anyone recommend a sunny balcony cabin”

Best avoid sharing a table with that passenger 🥴

Yes Sago, I joined a similar site and some of the questions have us in hysterics.
