I was brought up to believe that a woman's role in civilised society was to marry a man, run a home and bear and raise children. The man was the breadwinner so his role was to provide the money, discipline the children if necessary and be looked after by the wife. He had the responsibility and the final word when making important decisions affecting the family.

I have a casual widow friend who had this life and is now a miserable bitter lady. Always at odds with the world and jealous of women with a happy life.
One child who she hardly ever sees, unable to drive because her husband wouldn’t let her, and struggles with finances because her husband took care of everything except for the grocery money he gave her.
She is an intelligent woman and it makes me so sad to hear her talk.
She recently said that ‘ you had to get married young in order to leave home’. I was appalled to hear this ☹️

Well you can’t get much older than me and I wasn’t brought up like that my mum and both Nans worked my mum worked full time for all my childhood maternal Nan was running her own business of a boarding house so she had me with her while mum and dad were at work
