My teeth have generally been quite healthy and annual check ups have been enough for many years. However, I have had one tooth, a six year molar, that I believe never really formed properly and was damaged by Tetracycline. After years of ever larger fillings in that tooth, I had a porcelain crown placed on it in 2010. This worked very well until last Saturday when it came out while I was eating mince of all things. I went to the dentist yesterday and was told that the only viable option now was to remove the tooth. Fair enough and I didn’t have a problem with it but then the fun started. It was an absolute nightmare trying to remove the tooth. It kept breaking and took a very long, uncomfortable time to remove most of it. At this point the dentist conceded defeat and sent me out to the waiting room until his more senior colleague could see me. By the time I saw this dentist, the local anaesthetic had worn off and he could do no more. Apparently, my bone is very strong and I was told that although this was a good thing for me, it made it much harder for them to extract it. It wasn’t exactly a picnic for me. A further x-ray showed that there is still some of the root left and, in addition to this, the roots were entangled and fused with the roots either side. I am now on antibiotics and have a lump under my jaw and a bruised and battered feeling. I have to go back in three weeks to see what the next step is. The gap is at the bottom and not really visible so there is a possibility of leaving it, in which case they would probably leave the rest of the roots in my gum. A bridge is out of the question as the teen either side are intact (l only have one other bottom tooth with a filling, a few at the top). The only other realistic option is an implant - my bone is not a problem as has already been established, but I will have to have the remainder of the tooth removed beforehand and after yesterday’s experience, I am somewhat reluctant, although I will do whatever is necessary. Wise gransnetters, I know that several of you have experience of implants but have any of you had a similar scenario to me? What would you do? Any advice would be appreciated p.
