In fairness Taylor Swift has been around for years, she is the biggest selling singer in the world at the moment, and her fan base is huge, of all ages, a high proportion being her age (30s) or older. She’s not my cup of tea, I prefer Beyoncé, but she is hugely popular and famous. She is I guess currently the equivalent of Elvis in his heyday. What I find annoying is when people hit the headlines who haven’t achieved anywhere near as much, eg they appeared in Love Island or similar.

I usually bounce celebrity names off my son and he usually hasn't heard of them either. As far as the Daily Mail is concerned they published a story about the Beckhams some years ago which I knew to be totally untrue because a friend of mine was working for them at the time. I always presume that all their other celebrity news is just as unreliable.

I take absolutely no notice. I have no idea who a lot of them are and don't give a monkey's about any of them.

The BBC is bad for having celebs on their news pages. There were five articles about Taylor Swift on their front page when I looked earlier today. Could they not be condensed into one article?

They also had articles about other celebs I’ve never heard of and I wonder why. Is it to be ‘hip and trendy’? From what I read, nowadays youngsters don’t look to the likes of the BBC or print newspapers for news, they go to social media, so they’re flogging a dead horse there, I think.

I'm truly puzzled by the amount of space given to Taylor Swift in the Daily Mail. I think there were 4 or 5 separate ones this morning. I can understand one article perhaps announcing a big concert in the UK but this is saturation.

Her fans are mainly teenagers and I find it hard to believe they are reading this or any other newspaper for that matter. They have their own sources such as TikTok, YouTube etc. So the question remains, who are these articles appealing to?

What makes a person a ‘celebrity’? Being talked about without having done very much?

We don't read the Daily Mail articles about celebrities but enjoy (sometimes with gritted teeth) many of their other articles and the sporting and puzzle sections.

I never know who most of them are anyway.

I assume that Nepo babies are those whose parents were ‘in the business’ and only got their jobs through nepotism.

The two expressions that really annoy me are ‘legend’ and ‘ national treasure’ they seem to relate mainly to actors who have been in soaps, which I don’t watch anyway.

I must admit I find the love lives of people in the entertainment business incredibly boring. ( Memo to self, you sound like a miserable old git…)

Really? I'm out of touch with all that malarkey. Good luck to her. To my knowledge I've never heard anything by her. I'll have to have a listen.

Kate1949 From what I've read she is causing every bit as much mania, but don't forget people can see her through their phones etc. and don't always have to turn up in person. There was even a mention that she could swing the next election if she posts something online.

I know I'm biased but I don't think Beatlemania has turned into Swiftmania. I recently saw film of The Beatles' first visit to Australia. It was pandemonium. Hundreds of thousands lined the streets. People were in trees, on buildings. There was a crowd in a square that was so massive that it appeared to move as one. It's on YouTube Beatles in Australia 1964. I'm not sure Taylor has caused such mania, although I could be wrong as I've never taken much notice of her. However, I get your point Chestnut. She is the next new 'thing'.

I am not the slightest bit interested in any celebrities and, until last week, I didn't know who Taylor Swift was. And now I do know, I couldn't care less.

We are all agreed, but Taylor Swift is HUGELY popular and seems to inspire as much adoration as the Beatles in 1964. So 60 years on Beatlemania has become Swiftmania. The internet does magnify everything and mass hysteria even more so.

She has apparently just released a double album of tracks all about her ex boyfriends. There is another singer (British) who is suddenly very popular called Raye. Both of them are singing songs which include the f-word and are angry, bitter and aggressive. These songs are not suitable for children, who will not understand the hateful feelings and emotions expressed in them. Yet children are hearing them.

It makes me weep because popular music was never really suitable for children but they were never exposed to it as much as they are now. All the fun and joy has been sucked out of it. Instead of songs about love and peace we are now hearing songs about hate and bitterness and broken relationships. That is the music of today and that is what our children are hearing.

L’il Miss on our verandah just now looking out for mummy’s car saw a bus go past and said “look grandma Taylor Swift the Eros Tour” (poster on bus). She’s seven and her older brother tells me she’s a real ‘Swiftie’ asking Alexa to play her songs “all the time”!
