What were the first ever records that you bought and when?

I was thirteen, and bought Travellin' Light by Cliff. He was my first crush!

The first records I bought were Ride a White Swan by T. Rex and Black Night by Deep Purple. I played them on my dansette which I got for Christmas. I was about 12

Young Ones by Cliff Richard, bought for me by my then bf, who became my husband, father of my children and now , my Ex .

Twist and Shout EP by the fab four.

As a horse-mad child, the first record I ever bought was the theme song to the TV series White Horses. I must have been about seven at the time. maybe.

IIRC it was Love Me Do (Beatles)

One I really wanted for Christmas, dropped loads of hints but never got it, was Telstar. (6/8d was a lot to me then, esp. near Christmas, or I’d have bought it myself!).

1962, Joe Brown ‘A Picture of you’ I was staying with my Aunt and Uncle, they took me to Lee on Solent to a record shop, we also bought a box of Gramaphone needles as I had to play it on their wind up Gramaphone! If I wound it up enough I could almost hear the song all the way through…..
By the time my parents bought a Dansette the record wasn’t playable.

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No1 and Rachmaninov on the back. Electric Light Orchestra Out of Blue. Up until then I played my brothers records which everything the Beatles produced which is strange because I cant stand their stuff now.

I saved up 6/8d in 1961 and bought my first record - Billy Fury, Halfway to Paradise

One of the first was Rod Stewart Maggie May, I was 12 when I got my first record player, my sister had one for 2 years before that but wouldn’t let me use it.

Possibly Jethro Tull Aqualung.
But really loved Marc Bolan and T.Rex.

Everytime I hear that piano concerto it takes me back to a Xmas Eve when we were driving from Fort William to get the ferry to Skye to spend Xmas and the new year.

The first two vinyl singles I bought were
“long haired lover from Liverpool” by little Jimmy Osman and “knock three times on the ceiling” by Dawn, back in the early 70’s

I had very eclectic tastes (& still do!) in music having albums by T Rex, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper and The Partidhe Family!!

The Ying yang song by the Goons , we thought it was hilarious

My first record was Lonnie Donegan's Battle of New Orleans, which was an old fashioned 78rpm. Later I remember buying every Cliff record and also those of the Shadows. I used to buy the rarer ones through the NME paper, from money earned for my newspaper round. Others I recall were Little White Bull, Cathy's Clown, and The Three Bells, which was damaged and always stuck on 'the little congregation-gation-gation!

Oh Cossy my music choices are still hugely varied. Reggae through to anything bar ABBA lol.

The first single I bought was My Boy Lollipop by Millie (?). The first albums (I bought them together) were A Meal I Can Shake Hands With In The Dark by Pete Brown and the Battered Ornaments, and second, Wasa Wasa by the Edgar Broughton Band. Both Progressive Rock.

The oldest single which I still possess, is I’d Rather Go Blind by Chicken Shack featuring Christine Perfect (McVie). I bought it after a breakup when I was 16.

It’s great isn’t it to have such wife and varied taste, I love reggae, some pop music, some classical music, Frank Sinatra from my youth and so much more!
