Last weekend, in Rutland, the first statue in Britain of the late Elizabeth II was unveiled.

I read about it in the papers the other day and everyone was saying how beautiful it was. I totally agree with you, it looks nothing like our Queen and yes, the hands are terrible.

The Queen Mum used to smile a lot, tho her teeth were pretty bad.

It’s OK and I like the corgis, but the thin arms and hands are awful. I think it’s a good likeness, and in public she didn’t smile all that much anyway.

I can see no resemblence in either statue to her late Majesty . the gown shown on the first is more reminiscent of Queen Victoria and no-one in full evening dress and the Garter sash would be walking her dog, now would she?

The only time I ever saw the late Queen in the flesh she looked extremely glum to put it nicely - she just sat in her Rolls-Royce being driven through Paisley, looking neither left not right nor acknowledging our waves or cheers with the crossest expression possible on her face.

I was twelve, so the year must have been 1963, so it was hardly old age bothering HM. I was bitterly disappointed having be brought up to reverence the Royal Family.

Many local folk think that the Queen would have preferred the money be used for something more useful for the community.

What has really made me angry is that donors’ names are engraved in large letters on the plinth. This includes private individuals, companies and other organisations. I have never seen this on any other monument.

Such a pity she didn’t retire early thereby enabling the King to obtain hands on experience when he was healthy. This was selfish. I liked the Queen but she was no Saint and often seen sullen, frowning without a smile. She couldn’t or didn’t keep a tight reign on her husband who was not PC and she could have ‘trained’ him to be more appropriate. He was a horrid, rude and disrespectful man. The Queen could have stepped his rudeness. The King and Queen Camilla are doing wonderful work.

I agree with all you say about the queen and her demeanour... even tho' I liked her. ..but I have to take Issue with your comment that Philip was horrid and disrespectful. We were lucky enough to work alongside Prince Philip in the filming of a Documentary and he was abrupt but very kind... and everyone we spoke to who met or worked with him said the same

Not an attractive representation. The Queen looks stranded up there - arms thrown out in a gesture of "get me down from here and stop those corgis lifting their legs on my plinth".

I think the entire thing is absolutely hideous and looks quite menacing!

It's not brilliant, unfortunately.
But I do hope we come up with some wonderful memorial for the Queen.
Such a good and long living monarch deserves a tribute. Something similar to the Albert Hall which is both beautiful and useful.

I do prefer the York one. But let's face it, no statue executed in cold grey stone is ever going to do it's subject justice. I really don't see the point of them really.

I hope that's not the best they can do, otherwise they need to choose different jobs!!

The statue somehow looks as if it’s been there for ever It could be nineteenth century. Perhaps that is what they were trying to achieve

I'd love that as a statue! I'm surprised Wedgwood or Royal Doulton hasn't brought out a porcelain figurine yet.

I'm quite close by I might go and have a look on Saturday. Nice little market in Oakham.
