£20 cash per hour. Guy is retired so does it for extra money but he does a really good job and I am happy to pay that after some guy ripped me off for £50 one off payment (took him half an hour) when I was desperate to get the lawn cut.

I have a fantastic gardener/handy man who does jobs inside the house as well as outside. Today he mowed the two small lawns, edged and weeded then swept the patio area discussed with me which bedding plants I want to buy then fixed a washing line a bit lower so I can reach it and to finish he offered to run the hoover round in the house for me. On Saturday he is coming to paint the fence and start rubbing down the wrought iron gates, All this in two hours at £20 an hour. He’s in his sixties recently retired and was bored at home. If there are any garden problems he asks YouTube and he watches Monty Don on the TV. He only works for older people as he says they are far more interesting to be with. Long May he continue.

Would he let me adopt him?

I think you could safely say a lot of private gardeners are not paying public liability insurance, or income tax and maybe not NI. If they ask for cash in hand, they are probably not declaring these jobs to the tax people. However, as Astitchintime says, if you are multi-skilled and costing everything properly the rates would be a lot higher!

I have a gardener for lawn and hedges, once a fortnight for an hour or 2, he charges £20 per hour.

Last time £30 to someone who didn’t know a weed from a precious plant. This week £20 but he’s so patronising!

Your post reminded me of a tongue-in-cheek quote from a lovely nursey near me: "The best way to distinguish between a weed and a precious plant is to pull on it gently - if it comes up easily it was a precious plant!".

My husband is a gardener and doesn’t charge by the hour but by the job. He is a qualified landscape gardener who does pay tax, has liability insurance and gives a quote in writing before each job and an invoice for payment. All of his equipment is petrol run and often he has to pay to get rid of waste.
Those of you who have a handyman/retired gardener who charged £20/£25 an hour are very lucky. This is our livelihood and if we charged that we wouldn’t survive!

£15 for the first hour then £10 an hour, I have her an afternoon a fortnight so £45 a time, I still garden too but she gets through a lot more than me!

£18 an hour and she is excellent.

Around £20 - £25 an hour. Sometimes, in my experience it's better to more per hour as they do far more within that hour. It's a case of " how long is a piece of string?" really.

£35 for mowing the lawn and general tidying up. Could be 2 and a half hours depending on the state of everything. Very large garden. Co. Durham

We are insured for people working on our property.

I just asked my son- he only does a minimum of 2 hours work to cover his petrol costs and charges £40 for that 2 hours.

Half a day £75 and a full day £150- depending on the work needed. It isn't in his interest to do small jobs due to the travel time.

My gardener charges £20ph. He runs a proper business. it's not a pin money job. He's 50s years old and taught construction at a local college until he decided on a change of career.
He turns his hand to various jobs, mending kitchen cupboard doors, re-laying my patio, pressure washing as well as weeding, mowing and pruning.
I'm in the West Midlands.

We have someone who mows our lawn and is going to do some other jobs we'd like to do but I'm in no fit state to do.

He charges £15per hour, Lincolnshire.

South London - my gardener who is 50 and his younger co worker, both of whom have relevant qualifications , charge £25 an hour.

We pay £50 for a two hour visit once a fortnight (Nottinghamshire). He is expensive but worth every penny. He works flat out and I swear that he gets twice as much done as anyone else could do in the time. He is a professional landscaper and works solely by recommendation. No need to advertise or promote himself at all. Our garden looks lovely.
