Last time £30 to someone who didn’t know a weed from a precious plant. This week £20 but he’s so patronising!

I pay £20 hourly rate to have my mum’s garden done in the season. We are in rural Midlands.

Hi Fanny I've found a young lady who has a day time office job and does gardening in her spare time as she loves working in the fresh air. She charges £15 an hour for weeding, light pruning, grass cutting. Her clients are mainly elderly ladies, like myself, who find grubbing around on their knees difficult now. I've used her for a couple of sessions to help me with the backlog caused by the endless rain, but should manage myself for a while. She is a find really because this is stockbroker belt Surrey and full time gardeners usually charge much more and are sniffy about little jobs when they have mansions with rolling acres to aim for

My gardener has a crew, so there’s usually 2 or 3 of them.
It’s a big garden and I pay a flat £60 per visit, which includes cutting the grass, edging, weeding and turning over the borders. In addition, he’ll treat the drive way if I ask him.
He’s a professional and I pay directly into his bank account.

Hi Fanny not far from you - we pay £20 ph. We have no grass but a few beds. She comes once a month.

I guess it would really depend on what the gardener does; some just cut lawns and tidy up, others know about plants and when or when not to prune etc., do they also take away the rubbish? Either way, you have to factor in the cost of tools and equipment and a vehicle to get to each job, then there's public liability insurance, vehicle tax and insurance, national insurance and income tax. All things considered, and if I were to be a self employed gardener, I think at least £35 to £40 an hour is a reasonable starting point.

Here in East Anglia, it averages £18.00 to £20.00 per hour. However they are like gold dust. I have been on a waiting list for 6 months.

£24 an hour, once a fortnight near Bath. He has limited knowledge but is learning all the time and works really hard getting more done than most others. 4 years ago he was only £12.

£30 an hour NW London but recently I have paid £20 an hour because I have given good reviews. One fellow did not think I could own so much grass (I am loathe to do the work of the Council or pay for it). A couple did not have mowers and another fool came when dark to give me a quote, admitted he had no tools and was on his hands and knees feeling the grass.

I have a fantastic gardener/handy man who does jobs inside the house as well as outside. Today he mowed the two small lawns, edged and weeded then swept the patio area discussed with me which bedding plants I want to buy then fixed a washing line a bit lower so I can reach it and to finish he offered to run the hoover round in the house for me. On Saturday he is coming to paint the fence and start rubbing down the wrought iron gates, All this in two hours at £20 an hour. He’s in his sixties recently retired and was bored at home. If there are any garden problems he asks YouTube and he watches Monty Don on the TV. He only works for older people as he says they are far more interesting to be with. Long May he continue.

No, we have an enormous garden and manage it OU seven at the moment. No idea what the going rate is in SW Wales, but probably a lot lower than most other places

We need help occasionally, parts of the growing season. Not weekly, we pay a higher rate than if we hire for entire season. £25 an hour.
