£6.50 for a bunch of asparagus in Cornwall last week, but it was delicious!

I’m in Spain at the moment Joseann and bought two bunches of baby’s finger asparagus for €2 which we scoffed as a starter, fried in butter and sprinkled with black pepper 😋

😋 sounds lovely.
Asparagus is my favourite, I like the really thin sticks without any need for bad butter!
(The only downside is smelly wee! Sorry!)

Here are veg prices in waitrose and of course lidl and aldi are much cheaper

I paid 5€ 29 for a ropey cauliflower in France.
Then came home and saw French ones in Waitrose for a quarter of the price!

With the weather in the U.K. I think that we are going to notice a hike in prices too.

nanna8 is the cost of vegetables particularly high at the moment because crops have failed in Australia due to the weather? My sister lives there, and I know that nearly all your fruit and vegetables are grown domestically, so if you have a poor harvest the prices must increase?

We certainly have the same issue with fuel, I paid £1.61 a litre for diesel this week, the price is creeping up week on week again. Having said that, my local town was heaving with tourists yesterday, I think people were so excited to feel the sun for the first time since last September that they thought sod the cost of the petrol and made up for months of being stuck at home.

That certainly is very steep, nanna8! Is it perhaps down to adverse weather conditions - drought or flooding?

I was shocked at having to pay €4 for a cauliflower in France not long ago - and this was at a Carrefour, a bog-standard supermarket. It was a fairly big cauli, though.

DD thinks meat, fruit and veg are expensive.

Don’t forget visits to the doctor and prescriptions are charged for also over there.

My daughter and family live in Victoria, Australia. I haven’t visited for some years now but I gather that, whilst salaries are generally good (she's a senior buyer for Cotton On), they have to pay into a medical insurance scheme. Imported goods are inevitably expensive due to their location. Food prices seemed higher than here generally.

I wondered how the cost of living compares with the UK -just looking at individual prices isn’t helpful without an idea of wages etc.

Allotments are very popular in my area in the UK.
It might be possible to grow some vegetables yourself? Tomatoes and mushrooms for example?
Fuel prices here have risen but it’s unsurprising given the political situation. Putin must be very happy!
