Serious garage error .....

My DD and family set off for a weekend in London, but only got as far as Oxford as their car (which had been for a service and slow puncture repair art the end of last week) started to make strange noises and rattle. They left the car with a friend in Oxford and went on by train.

They came back yesterday, having met the AA man in Oxford. To cut a long story short, the garage had failed to tighten the bolts on the wheel - one bolt had already fallen off and the others were all loose.

This error could have caused carnage. I am so angry about it. They are going to the garage - a main dealer - today to "have words" about it.

Way back in 1957(!) my mother and I had this happen to us. We were travelling back to Highcliffe from Bournmouth having just had a tyre changed at the Fiat garage. The car started driving badly, making a clinking noise. We got back ok, driving very slowly. When my stepfather had a look, he discovered that the wheel was within an ace of coming off as it had only been finger tightened! I was 15 at the time, so don't know what the outcome was, but I can guarantee that Fiat were told all about it in no uncertain terms!!

Family received a refund of the cost of the service (during which the error had been made) and were refunded the cost of the train tickets that were needed to complete their journey.

But that is only money and does not cover the fact that the garage needs better systems in place to ensure it does not happen again.
