Do you understand the humour or lack of it in your area?

When we moved to Suffolk in the 80s we were regarded as incomers for a few years. Funnily, those that regarded us as incomers only beat us by a couple of generations.

Try being a Geordie our humour is fab but sometimes a bit rye. We love a bit of banter I’m a cross between ant macpartlin and Vera! 😂😂

Two Geordies here, and we've just switched 'Vera' on. Funnily enough, she lives in Ramsgate, not far from where we live now in Isle of Thanet, Kent.
She'd never get away with being a real cop in this day & age the way she banters on with the Scottish lad, Kenny!
Lovely scenery, BFF aka my housemate, loves to spot known areas.
We're from different parts, about 26 miles between our home towns, and I have been here much longer so his humour does go over my head sometimes. Whereas he thinks my mind dwells in the gutter as far as my humour is concerned. I blame that on my DC Dad, who was from Surrey 🤣
Needless to say, my DC have a weird SOH, too, with one parent being a Geordie, one from Surrey (one of the posh parts to boot), them born on The Isle of Thanet and friends from various places!
It's the DGC I worry about, with all this woke rubbish and stuff today!!

The American friends I have on Fb love the British sense of humour.
English-French etc, probably a lot gets lost in translation.
Fb and especially it's bots, well, their sense of humour is almost non-existent!!

Moving to a new area means getting to know new people and what makes them laugh. Just because they don't all smile at you like the Cheshire Cat doesn't mean they're grumpy or lacking a sense of humour....they're probably wondering why you're an EX-Brummie, and if you're safe to be around? Lol

French humour and British humour don't seem to have a meeting point.

American humour is quite different I find. Very ‘slapstick ‘. Exception is New York humour, now that can be very funny.

I’m a Brummie too but have lived in the south east all my married life. Some years back we visited the Black Country Museum which was fabulous. I understood all the jokes that the staff/workers there were saying and was transported back to my childhood and remember the laughs we all had. I so miss the humour.

I m an East Anglian and when my London friends come up here they can’t get over how friendly and pleasant people are
I ve lived in a variety of places and never found people that different to be honest I talk to anyone I think it all depends how kind and friendly you are as to what reaction you get

I’m a Londoner (cockney) and I fully get that humour. But, I spent some years in deepest, darkest Sussex (in villages), and I never quite got it…🤐

I am a southerner of the older generation and I will talk and smile at anyone. I also call young people or children sweetheart and darling. I don’t care if someone calls me luv or me dear. I say thank you to anyone who may offer me a seat on the tube and I don’t think they are being ageist! Political correctness, wokeism, identifying as, it is a minefield to traverse in todays world and I think it may be more prevalent in the south. Sadly people now feel it is easier and safer to say nothing.

Anyway, to answer the post, Aussie humour is very different from American and more like the British - very dry and a lot of irony. Sometimes quite crude ( but funny).

Some time ago when on a plane to somewhere, a woman with a very whiny, childish voice, was complaining , sniffing and spluttering to relieve her sinus problem.
I suffer too when flying, so had some unvoiced sympathy for her, but the fuss and noise she was making was exraordinary.

Not the best example of Aussie humour but it tickled me.

I left the midlands and moved to Northern Ireland 20 years ago, don't think folk here ever got my sense of humour except my husband (we met 9 years ago)
I've given up with his family now and no longer try to make new friends

I live in the far south and find people have a good sense of humour. Very pleasant and willing to chat.
I come from East Anglia which I found less friendly.

I've lived in a few different parts of the country and have found good humoured, friendly people everywhere.

Liverpool humour is rather funny you can take the pi🤣🤣 or the Mick or give out the banter it’s not meant to be nasty. If you are from the surrounding area and understand it you won’t be offended by it. Most Scousers have a natural ability to laugh at themselves a lot of people might not understand. But there is nothing wrong with that it’s a sense of character and humour better than being a misery any day.

Ordinarygirl I have to say I found the complete opposite. We have just moved back to the East Midlands from Cheshire were we found no sense of humour at all apart from screeching out all your families' business when in the pub and then laughing like a drain at mega decibels. I also think when people clocked what they thought were our accents we were then discounted from any conversation. We are both from London originally and I do think people have a wonderful sense of humour everywhere you go there although it may be more subtle and satirical. Its very soft here and the people are very warm and chatty.

ordinary girl some people just have no sense of humour don’t lose yours and keep 😊.
