Do you understand the humour or lack of it in your area?

I'm an ex-Brummie and I accept that people from the Midlands are generally outgoing. We may have a dark humour. My question is if any of you have moved to a different part of the country, do you understand their humor or lack of it? I've moved to a completely different county and people rarely smile. Most of the shop assistants that do smile have not been in this county. I spoke to a smiling shop assistant today and she said that people around here don't smile . I dare not try to joke with some people as there is no response . My personal view is that the further south you go the worse it gets. Am I wrong?

Smiling and being friendly is one thing, but joking especially with strangers can be subjective and consequently fraught with potholes.
Your joke may come across as 1) not very funny 2) patronising 3) offensive 4) unwelcome “banter” - a shop assistant is there to do a job not to be your comedy club audience

I’m sorry you’ve found that ordinarygirl I live in the far south and have great banter with all sorts of people, including the bin men, shop assistants and my GP, to name but a few. I’ve not lived anywhere else in the UK as an adult, so can’t comment on other areas.
So, I think you’ve been unfortunate, don’t give up, a smile, chat, or a joke helps everyone’s day pass better, even if they, or you, are working.

Try being a Geordie our humour is fab but sometimes a bit rye. We love a bit of banter I’m a cross between ant macpartlin and Vera! 😂😂

It’s an interesting question, humour may well be different just as accents are.Having only lived in the South I can’t compare.
Being friendly is another thing altogether tho and I find people who smile and those who don’t wherever I go.
