You are obviously an “owl” as I am. Why get your k***** in a twist over it?? It’s your natural rhythm.

Up at 6 to 6.30 every day. I love the peacefulness and, at this time of year, the sunlight. The first cup of tea sitting outside in warm weather is a cherished moment.
On the other hand, I am usually in bed by nine!

We are always awake early - before 7.00am. But I am not up and dressed before 9.00 unless I have to be ready to go out. I like a leisurely start to the morning.

I’m a lark, inherited from my father. I think far more men than women are larks. Most of the early dog walkers are men.
I’ve never used an alarm clock as I’ve never slept beyond 6am and at this time of year it’s often between 4 and 5. I get up straight away, can’t bear lying in bed once I’ve woken.p

As we produced more and more children we found we were getting up earlier and earlier and eventually started setting the alarm at 5.45 to manage a peaceful cup of tea before they started piling into our bed.

Now we find that we still wake up at 5.45 but generally sit in bed to watch Breakfast and drink tea until 7.30.

I go to bed really early - about 9.30 and read. DH will stay up and watch football or music for a while longer.

I am not an early riser usually get up around 9/9.30am unless I have to be somewhere at a specific time. To me that is what retirement is all about, no need to set the alarm clock, rush to the station, be on someone else's time schedule. Not sure I feel that I am missing out on anything.

I wake early so get up early, not when I first wake though but up 6.30 to 7am. go to bed at midnight wish I could sleep longer but can't lay there once awake.

I'm not an early bird, naturally, and I still "play up" about going to bed; put it off, find things I "must do", or a programme I "have" to watch.

I always got up for work though.

Cabbie21 Wed 15-May-24 12:44:18

I wish I could sleep longer. Today I woke at 3.50, yesterday it was 4.30 and no more sleep. I would prefer to wake about 7.15 and be downstairs by 8.00 or even 8.30.
I try to go to bed by 11, or earlier.
If I’ve got something important to do I need to get it done. I have more energy in the morning.
It’s not worth worrying about though once retired.

Why not just accept your natural circadian rhythm, Newat? Go with the flow, so to speak.

If getting up early makes you feel wretched and tired for the rest of the day why would you want to do it when you don't have to?

What do you think you're missing out on?

We are both Larks, roll out of bed into the shower at 6.15am, bed time 10pm always been the same, mornings suit me well.
I always prefer the 8am shift at work, even though late shift is quieter.

I don't go to bed until early hours I get up as soon as I wake usually about 8am. When I was working and helping with GC it was obviously earlier to bed and very early morning starts.

DH is just arranging train times for weekend away to London. I'm already getting irritated just thinking about getting up very early hours. I won't tolerate alarms can't be doing with them.

Now it's gardening time I will get up earlier. I want to make the most of the warmer seasons after the long miserable months of winter.

Why do you want to get up early and what is it you think you’re missing? As long as there are enough hours in the day to get stuff done, but being retired, does it really matter?
I spent years getting up at the crack of a spuggy’s (sparrow) fart to exercise dogs - no dogs now, so I can please myself. Some days I’m up by 7am, sometimes 8 and very occasionally 9. My friend, younger than me, isn’t ready to face her day until 11am.
Shoukd you really want to be up early, I guess it’s back to multiple alarm clocks and your phone alarm set and on snooze too.

I am a night owl, sleep at 3am and up at 10am, I just make appointments for later in the day, go to thesupermarket at night, etc you just need to change the times that you do things

I used to be late to bed and late to rise, even when I was working.

Of late I've realised I get more done if I wake early so I still set my alarm but find I can wake up anytime between 5:30 and 7:00.

I go to bed at 10:00 now which is much earlier than I used to.

Newatthis Tue 14-May-24 22:09:15

I am most definitely not an early riser but I wish I was. During my working life I needed three alarm clocks to wake me and now that I am retired I don't 'surface' until about 10am. I know I'm missing out on so much but if I ever have to rise early (flights, travel etc) then I feel wretched and very tired for the rest of the day. Any hints and tips on how to make it a routine?
