I like the actual portrait and the idea of the butterfly. The jury is still out on all that red.

I like it. I see a lot of William in Charles's face here. The hands are excellent too. The background, though unusual, doesn't bother me. If anything, it helps one focus on the face and hands. The butterfly on his shoulder is a nice touch and apparently Charles's idea.

Yes, it's an excellent representation of the face and hands. If you'd never seen this man before, you'd recognise him if he stood next to you in the bus queue. But all that red? My first thought was that vandals had attacked it with tomato ketchup. So, no, I don't like it - but such portraits are not there to be liked.

Interesting to read everyone's comments. My first impression was "Oh for goodness sake. What rubbish!". Yes the likeness is excellent, but why swamp it in that sea of red? If he - the artist - wanted to camouflage the red of his Guard's uniform, why have him wear it in the first place. I would have liked him painted in his garden surrounded by trees, flowers, birds and butterflies - that would have been so much more 'him'. Whatever - it's certainly got folks talking 😉

The artist has the face just right. He is obviously very talented but as someone on BBC news said ' the king looks as though he is peeping out from behind a red curtain.'

It is a good likeness but, for me, it channels Banquo's ghost.

It looks like a death portrait, like how they'd dress up the dead in Victorian times, pose them and take their photos with living family!
This 'artist' could have at least tried to place Charles in a nice garden setting, but maybe that's beyond his ability!

Love it. So good to have something different from throne room, robes, regalia all swamping the person portrayed, and not twee. I think a garden setting would be too one-sided for the portrait of a king ... but there are more portraits to come, undoubtedly

I think it’s lovely

I’m another who loves it, Charles looks so approachable, there’s been no attempt to hide his wrinkles, etc. As others have said, it’s wonderful to see something that differs from the usual stiff formalism of the usual royal portraits.

Isn’t the red a tribute to Wales as it was commissioned when he was PoW?

I love it too. The face is excellent. From a discussion on the tv today it seems as though they didn't want the full regalia to be shown but some of it is just visible.

I think the portrait is extraordinarily well done.

The red somewhat hides all the buttons, ribbons, braid bits well, his face is brilliantly painted. I wonder, as he appears to have a rosy skin condition, if this was painted so as to somewhat cover that rosy look?

His hands are excellent as well. Very clever portrait.

The background looks so awful, rushed, unthoughtful, meaningless and bloody that I think it should be re-done with a natural color in tune with a natural environment. Everything else about it is lovely.

I would love to see it in real life. Face and hands are brilliant. There will be so many portraits of him over the next few years and this one is certainly memorable. ...for good reasons. His expression is kind and approachable. I hope he paints Camilla as well.
