Perhaps we should be buried with a poison pill to take, just in case. Or maybe a loud whistle.
No chance for those cremated, of course.

Just in case I'm having a mobile phone put in with me just before the lid goes on

I believe in life after death, just wondering how long it takes to get there….im claustrophobic šŸ˜‚

... depends whether there's a current strike on the transport system...

Poppyred, that silken thread which remains intact until you have permission to leave. It is invisible and your soul/energy will never remain in the confines of a coffin or a funeral home. Don`t fear that your soul/energy/essence will be trapped in your body. It won`t be. That is the time when you will be free to `visit` family and friends, some of whom will sense your presence. The funeral or just saying those words `you can go` will undo that silken thread and the spirit will become completely free

That’s very comforting, thank you.

This is where the term 'wake' originates from. The family and community gather round the body until the funeral just in case they 'wake' up. I suggest you make a stipulation in your will (make sure your family know, to make sure) that a wake is held so people can come and visit to check you're dead and celebrate your life with food and drink before sending you off.
If you don't want this doing at home it could be arranged (I suspect at a cost) at the funeral home.

It is a practice still held in many parts of the world and I think we should bring it back here too, if you want of course, it shouldn't be mandatory lol!

I can’t think of anything worse! Hate being the centre of attention when alive, let alone dead! Thanks anyway.

A stake through the ā¤ļø should do it šŸ˜‚
I have always said I want a mausoleum so I can get up and go home if someone got it wrong.

Imarocker I think that is where the term the graveyard shift was referring to,someone was paid to sit and listen for any bells ringing out.

Imarocker Sun 19-May-24 08:25:26

The Victorians used to be buried with a string attached to a bell so they could ring for help if they had buried alive. Trust me, once you are actually dead, by definition, you have no knowledge of what is going on.

What I meant was, what if we are still aware of what’s going on even if we are dead? 😱

Then your a ghost šŸ˜‚

I’m our area funerals are taking up to 3 weeks to take place, I think anyone who isn’t dead would be found by then.

Astitchintime Sun 19-May-24 07:46:38

Given the time that it took the Doctor to actually certify that my Mum was dead, I don't think there was any doubt. We had to wait over a week for the document to be available - Doctor had gone on holiday and forgotten to complete the paperwork - and then, when we went to collect it from the Bereavement Centre at the hospital where Mum died (by appointment only I must add), the clerk in the office was dismissive, bad mannered, and very rude. Certainly not what anyone wants to experience when they are grieving.

BlueBelle Sun 19-May-24 07:40:51

Well it has happened here, but yes that’s always worried me too, one reason I changed from burial to cremation I thought it would be quicker than waking up underground There have been cases of people waking in the mortuary haven’t there ?

Does it happen? 😱

Years ago I read of a case in South America. The elderly woman was in a deep coma, then noises were heard from her coffin. She died soon after the coffin was opened.

I think in poorer countries that could happen, but I don't think it could happen here, given the medical expertise here.

Curtaintwitcher Sun 19-May-24 06:57:07

Sadly, it does happen. You could stipulate in your will that you will not be buried until it is obvious you are actually dead.

Poppyred Sun 19-May-24 06:52:21

After reading the Anaesthetic thread, this reminded me of my worst fear…..I have this dread of being in my coffin and still being aware of what’s happening. I don’t mean being pronounced dead by mistake…..
