I think “it is what it is” is very useful in certain circumstances. Not to shut someone else down but I use it to myself when my head gets buzzed about my husband’s death. To me it means accept the circumstances for what they are.
I agree. It is annoying when people use it to tell someone that there is no point in continuing the conversation, but as a way of indicating acceptance it is very different.
As for the flounce, I love this meme
. It's even more annoying (and less amusing) when people make their point at length and then say they are leaving the thread - it's the ultimate in 'I will have the last word'.
Oh, and speaking of that, a less common version is when someone can't answer a point, so says ' You are wrong, but I'll let you have the last word.' and disappears, having had the last word and closed down the opportunity for their opponent to comment on their rant.
And the ultimate in closing down debate - making several one-word posts to bring the total to 1000, at which point the thread will have to end. So rude.
