It has just dawned on me that there are a number of "shut the conversation down" comments.

The one I have had today
"you are overthinking".

Realise there are plenty more that maybe I hadnt noticed before.
Please feel free to enter here.

I guess it is better to flounce off than tell someone to F off. Another trick here is to change your name but invariably the style is the same and the changer pretty soon gets rumbled.

Doodledog - that would be me stuffed then - I'm always last up!

Ha! But then you get to have the last word. . . .

wink

This thread is becoming quite amusing.

^making several one-word posts to bring the total to 1000, at which point the thread will have to end^

😯

Clever - haven't seen that one! 😀

It happens a lot on 'trans threads' when Some People are losing the argument wink. It closes the thread and denies other posters the right to make their point.

It's very tiresome - it's akin to taking the remote control upstairs to stop others from watching TV when you're in bed grin.

🤣🤣🤣

Oh please, no! grin

In the interests of pure scientific research I entered "pearl clutchers" into the gransnet search engine. It's very thin on the ground atm so will need some work to encourage its return......

🤔

I do agree about the ‘flounce’ Wyllow3 especially when they re-appear not long afterwards.

grin

I’m off this thread now.

Oh, hang on, someone’s agreed with me, I’m back on, folks!

I think “it is what it is” is very useful in certain circumstances. Not to shut someone else down but I use it to myself when my head gets buzzed about my husband’s death. To me it means accept the circumstances for what they are.

I agree. It is annoying when people use it to tell someone that there is no point in continuing the conversation, but as a way of indicating acceptance it is very different.

As for the flounce, I love this meme grin. It's even more annoying (and less amusing) when people make their point at length and then say they are leaving the thread - it's the ultimate in 'I will have the last word'.

Oh, and speaking of that, a less common version is when someone can't answer a point, so says ' You are wrong, but I'll let you have the last word.' and disappears, having had the last word and closed down the opportunity for their opponent to comment on their rant.

And the ultimate in closing down debate - making several one-word posts to bring the total to 1000, at which point the thread will have to end. So rude.

For the record, and to establish that it's not a man thing, I detest "It is what it is".

TillyTrotter Tue 28-May-24 12:02:45

An iconic one that comes to mind is Margaret Thatcher’s “the lady’s not for turning”.
That must have frustrated many of her peers.

Flouncer. Flounder. grin

Namsnanny Tue 28-May-24 12:00:57

Urquhart, 'You might think that but I couldn't possibly comment'. So perfectly pompous.
Note to self, find ways to use this more often.😄

MissAdventure Tue 28-May-24 12:00:33

Wyllow3

There is the "flounce".

A poster makes some critical points against someone else then says, "and I'm off now".

I love the flounce; it has so many variations, but they all involve the flounder going off to do something really wonderful. grin

My DH too GrannyGravy. It's his favourite sentence.

The pearl clutching will be along again soon, I have no doubt.

Clawdy Tue 28-May-24 11:45:30

"That's the least of my worries!" (I say that sometimes.....)

Gin Tue 28-May-24 11:31:00

Daddima, you are quite right, a conversation is two way. I have often noticed someone asked a question to which they presumably would like an answer or another point of view but the posters ramble on without any regard to what was being asked.

" I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong ".

I like that one 😀

Wyllow3 Tue 28-May-24 11:20:18

There is the "pearl clutching" but I haven't seen it recently.
