I am 72 and still feel young, I try to keep up with fashion and can't abide old granny clothes and like to keep my hair looking good. Still love wear good cut jeans etc. Can never quite understand why some ladies and men seem to let themselves go as they age.

I dont feel any different "inside" than when I was in my 20s. However I have a lot more confidence to do what I want without worrying about the opinions of others. I have a couple of business suits for if the need arises but I dont follow fashion or really care what I look like around the house. I wear what I feel comfortable in.

RosiesMaw, you definitely do not look like 'granny in the corner'!
You have style and panache in abundance and you wear it well!

Yes, very young, about nine years of age. I collect toys, children’s books, especially pop up and toy theatres etc. etc. I probably have arrested development due to an unhappy childhood and can live in a dream world.

On a more practical note, having been a professional singer and still singing, I like to present a good appearance to the world, which includes quite a lot of fakery (including Botox) and good genes. Most people apart from close family, have no idea of my health issues and that’s how I like it. I can fool myself and others (most of the time) that I am much younger than I really am.

I must say I prefer my more settled temperament these days to my rather volatile younger self.

I’m so glad it isn’t just me. My daughter keeps nagging me to get rid of all the toys I have in the house ( some old that were my kids, some that I’ve picked up in charity shops, some that DD passed on for DS’s kids but never made it to their house. I have a collection of Ladybird books, wooden toys, Fisher Price toys (lots of). Old books, especially old pop up books that I’ve found in charity shops. My mum threw all of my toys and teddies away when I left home and I think I’m eternally trying to get them back. It took me decades to replace some of my favourite books. I bought an old dolls pram because I’d always wanted one but it’s sat in the garage going rusty!

I would like to collect my childhood books, but they aren’t cheap😮

Well I was ... mostly (I'm 69), but I just had a close up photo taken of a mark near one eye by my GP (for my records so they can monitor it) and my first reaction was "Oh God, look at my wrinkles!" As I wear specs and am very short-sighted, it's rare that I see my eye area clearly and it was a bit of a shock! Specs back on now though and I shall feel youngish again just as soon as I've gotten over the shock.

Older than 72 and still feel young inside. I know I don’t loook my age; I try to wear fashionable clothes and have a good haircut. I have, however, realised that I no longer look 35!

One of them, which I found on EBay, was so tatty someone could easily have just thrown it away but I was overcome with emotion when it arrived.I could remember every word, every picture. I then found one in a better condition that was a bit more expensive. Years ago I started collecting Ladybird Thomas the Tank books because my grandson was mad about Thomas. My SIL put them in a box for the rubbish tip but thankfully my daughter spotted them ( they were in pristine condition).

Just before this was posted I was thinking back to how my grans dressed. They wore shirt-waister dresses, toning cardi, tan tights & sensible shoes. (maternal gan in navys & rusts -paternal gran pastel dress with pink cardi). And they wore that everywhere - home, shopping, steakhouse, diamond wedding party. I actually felt envious because we accepted they'd reached an age where they wore a sort of "gran uniform" - they didn't have to worry about being under-dressed or over-dressed, about fashion, & with such a limited wardrobe, everything mixed & matched. As someone who can feel inappropriately dressed & self concious whilst walking the dog, although I'm in my 60's, I felt rather envious of them.

I can’t imagine a life in which women couldn’t/wouldn’t wear trousers. I don’t think my mum ever owned a pair.

My mother, born 1912, was a snazzy dresser to the end. Throughout my childhood people used to comment on how well she dressed, presumably because I clearly didn't follow in her footsteps.

My last Christmas present to her was some pretty lacy underwear. Her mother was also always very elegantly dressed. She was a professional dresmaker and not at all well off, but knew how to use and reuse every garment that came her way.

However, my paternal grandmother held my mother in deep suspicion of being 'no better than she ought to be' because she loved pretty clothes and wore makeup (lipstick and powder). My grandmother did not have much time for me either, presumably I was considered to be too much like my mother!

I dress what suits me, I feel younger than my 72 years, probably because I had a late 40's pregnancy and am an older mum, plus I have had the care of my grandson(autistic)since he was 3 and now 15,so life is very busy still dealing with teenagers, I have good knowledge of Minecraft pokemon etc grin I now understand when people say age is just a number, because of my younger family a lot of my friends are younger,
I still have aches and pains,my husband had a stroke and brain surgery later on so I care for him, can't think of getting old it's not convenient

I don't think feeling young has anything much to do with wearing semi trendy clothes.
I feel like death warmed up, and it's not to do with what I wear.

I wake up every morning feeling just like that MissA. As long as I’m waking up in pain every day, and living my life in constant pain, I’m not going to be feeling like a spring chick. Get the treatment I need and get rid of the pain and I might feel more like my old self.

I think my clothes could go out of fashion in the time it takes me to put them on, maddyone
It kind of takes the shine off things.

I feel young in myself but physically I'm most definitely not which is a real nuisance - but I still maintain my sense of humour and that's important

netflixfan Wed 05-Jun-24 18:21:47

No I’m shattered! I look ok- hair done, facials, modern clothes, go to the gym, keep the brain active but inside I’m tired!! I’m not too bothered about it either smile

maddyone Wed 05-Jun-24 21:25:26

Thanks MissA.

Farzanah, thank you for understanding my comment.

to thine own self be true . . .

I’m sorry your bereavement, welbeck, and I hope you get good news, Madmeg flowers flowers

Farzanah Thu 06-Jun-24 10:37:19

I’m sorry for your bereavement welbeck and for all who are sad at this time.
Life is too precious and fleeting to worry about the superficial.

I still feel young inside especially when sitting 😂. I like clothes and I think I dress well. However needing work done in the home I’ve found that I’m classified as ‘easy game’. I’m old, a woman and widowed. Some of the quotes I have been given for the job are ridiculously high. £4000 for a fence of 25 ft for example. Luckily an ‘older’ builder had taken over and is getting the job done quickly and well -even tidy! He came in at just under half of the most expensive. So yes I now feel ‘old’ especially when there are so many cowboys about. It’s the first time I’ve considered leaving my bungalow and going into a serviced apartment. Holding my own here but only just.

Glamnan67 Sat 08-Jun-24 16:35:08

I’m 57 but I absolutely do not feel or look it I’m glam and it’s staying that way 😀

When people say I look young for my age. I just tell them that their stereotypes of what my age should look like are out of date.

When DH was 40, he met someone he had been at university with and hadn't seen since. He came back in shock. This man had white hair and finely lined face, where DH had no grey hair and a smooth unlined face. At university this man had been the baby faced one having diffiulty proving his age in pubs.

Take that another 20 or 40 years and the divergence is even greater. Aging and how you show it is a combination of genetics, what has happened to you in life and how you have been able to respond to them.

I have been very fortunate, good genes, a comfortable life, and a healthy dose of vanity.

Since joining a U3A painting group and taking my painting more seriously than I have done for years, I have found myself going back to my 18 year old student self, which is great fun. Reality kicks in when arthritis strikes and it takes me three goes to get out of a chair or 15 minutes to "throw a few clothes on" but I think I'm doing quite well.
