The demise of the milkman/woman.

I started using the local milkman during the pandemic because I could get milk, eggs cheese etc delivered and I told him that I would continue to use him even though the milk is more expensive so I’m staying loyal to him now.

Yes we have a milk lady who delivers milk from the farm where she works - no sure if she actually milks. We can see the large Friesen herd often from the road. They also have an ice cream parlour. I have started ordering cheese and yogurt from her to as well as eggs which she sells from another local farm. Only a twice a week delivery but it works for us.

We have milk delivered from our local dairy 3 times a week and have never heard them making a noise. Our milkman puts it in the picnic box that we leave in the porch. We use the box mainly to stop birds from pecking at the milk tops!

Ours delivers 3 times a week and we could have more frequent deliveries. Rarely have a problem bottle.

Simple to change on the app, or add a bit of shopping if needed. I’ve never been aware of the delivery taking place. The delivery driver must float over the gravel drive to the door step!

I changed from supermarket milk after completing the Big Plastic Count a couple of years ago, when I realised that just over 50% of our plastic recycling was from milk alone.

We had milk delivered as did many people in the village I live in until one morning there was no milk delivery but a rude email from the dairy telling me my account had been cancelled as the payment had been declined due to insufficient funds and my account would not be reinstated. I was so worried as money was in my account. It seemed everyone in the village who had milk delivered received the same email due to a computer error. Most people including us didn’t bother to try and rejoin.

As there is only me, and I don't use much, so my milkman comes twice a week with bottled milk and also delivers my weekend newspapers. As I live in a very rural area it is good to know that, if I ring in advance, he will deliver many other things as well as cream, orange juice and eggs. Wouldn't be without him, a dieing breed!!

I have two bottles a week delivered by MilknMore.. they have other stuff for sale, but as I am living on my own, I have no need, only very occasionally.
My milk comes in the very early hours, I think, electric vehicle as I do not hear a thing. no clattering or anything.. the bottle of milk appears on my doorstep as if by magic.. and the bottle, helps reduce the plastic manufactured and used by the producers of same,, not requested by me and little alternatives!

We have doorstep delivery. Our previous milkman never missed a day over 45 years until one evening he called to say apologies his mother had died that day. When he died he was taken to the church on a milk cart pulled by a horse. The whole neighbourhood lined the roads to bid him farewell. His replacement who now delivers milk is just as good.

We have ours delivered twice a week. We have a One Stop round the corner so don’t really need it delivered but we like to support a small business and love the glass bottles. Ours comes between 3-4am but as I get up at 4.30 to go to work, the early delivery isn’t an issue. This particular company has delivered to us for 7 years and we’ve never had any milk stolen yet!

I’ve had a milkman in the past but found I always ended up with too much and they ignored the notes I left.
Don’t feel guilty about not supporting the dairy industry. In this day and age it’s amoral. We have used soya milk for years now.

Cannot remember the last time I saw a milkman. I do remember leaving empty yoghurt cartons out to go on top of the bottles to stop the birds pecking the silver tops and occasionally finding the milk had gone off when it had been left out all day in the sun. Memories!

My milkman leaves 2pts semi-skimmed on Mondays and 1pt on Fridays - very early in the morning. He delivers other dairy items as well if asked. £3.20 a week I think. I can buy 2pts for £1.25 at my local supermarket but the milkman is reliable and convenient and I like to support him. Also it's not using plastic.

We have three deliveries per week in glass bottles. I like to do my bit for the environment and the cost isn't too much more than the plastic containers. DH organises it all through the dairy's website and we can change deliveries easily and efficiently. Never had a problem.

I stuck with the milkman for years, and for ages after everyone was buying from the supermarket. The number of days started dropping, the reliable milkman who had delivered for years was made redundant, the number of days they delivered reduced even more, the milkman I then had was coming much later in the days mid morning, which was ok if the weather was cool but no good in summer if I was out for any length of time. Then he started ignoring any notes I put out, An extra pint, or no milk today. I asked him one day when I saw him and was told he'd seen the note Monday and thought I'd just left it out Wednesday and had forgotten to take it in so ignored it. He started not taking the empties, so I built up loads. This was at a time when my parents were in and out of hospital and having all sorts of last minute problems 200 miles away so I often had to take off at short notice and stay there, I get it must have been frustrating but I didn't want to come back from a visit and find bottles of off milk on my doorstep.

In the end I had to start getting supermarket milk as he was becoming so unreliable, and cancelled. I took all the empties to the dairy and lined them up in front of the gate
This was when online stuff was well established and I'd have happily ordered what I needed online from them, and indeed paid them online
I still see the float, it still.comes round midmorning

We get our milk and eggs from Paradise Farm four times per week. Monthly bill paid by cheque! and we have a steep drive. I don’t hear the them arrive they are very very reliable even in the most atrocious weather and I have an insulated lidded container which keeps the milk cold even on the sort of stormy nights which turn milk. Our newspaper is also delivered in the early hours and again never fails . Paid by direct debit.Window cleaner is once a month paid cash or bank transfer. Life is easy here.

BTW if I have a glut because DH has changed his mind about boiled eggs for breakfast I just make a crème caramel with 4-6 eggs and two pints of milk.

we used to have the milk delivered years ago...now I get it with my Tesco order,,,I don't think there is a milk delivery now...same with daily papers, never see the delivery boys now
we do still get a window cleaner, he even cleaned the guttering for us ..

I regret the use of plastic, because of the difficulty in disposing of it or recycling it. I buy 5-6 + x 2litre cartons per week.

Our local supermarket supplies milk from a local farm and it’s 30p cheaper per 2litre carton than the delivery man who delivers in glass or plastic. That wouldn’t be that much extra for supporting a local business.

The local milkman will deliver bottles or plastic cartons of milk from the same farm as the supermarket, but I find it goes off more quickly, especially in summer.
4 pints in glass bottles would cost £1.10 more per set of 4pints. That’s considerably more per week.

deliver quietly late evening in my street. Not a street where it would be stolen but they leave them hidden from view by car.

My neighbour used to have milk deliveries. I think she still has them, although I don’t hear the clinking so much. Must ask her.

Unfortunately, the milk delivered by our local milkman is almost double the price of Tesco, so we have to forgo the luxury of doorstep deliveries.
