The demise of the milkman/woman.

I have milk delivered 3 times a week in glass bottles,my milkman also delivers grocerys, yogurt,fruit juice etc if I order it on their app,milk from the milkman tastes so much better then from the supermarket,yes it's abit more expensive then the supermarket,but your also paying for the convenience of having it delivered to your doorstep

If they delivered goats' milk in glass bottles I would certainly support a delivery. I do not like milk in plastic. Some types of plastic leach into liquid and can be carcinogenic. I have not researched whether that happens with the Tesco bottles as I don't touch the stuff!

We have three deliveries a week. In over thirty years I’ve never seen or heard my milkman. Wonderfully quiet and totally reliable. Yes it’s more expensive than a supermarket but we never run out. Don’t ever want to be without the milk person🤣!

We’ve always had our milk delivered, from local farms and in glass bottles. Our last milkman used to deliver in the very early hours, so we had to leave a cool box out for it, but since he retired and someone else took over it’s been perfect. Delivered just before 6, and the milk lad leaves the vehicle at the end of the street and runs down with it - we haven’t heard a single clink in 6 years! We manage the account and pay online. We have our weekend and local papers delivered as well, so we’re well served.

Wanting to support the milk deliveries we started having it delivered a couple of years ago. On the first morning I called my grandchildren out to see the bottles on the step and one said, “ ooh wonderful. We’re old fashioned. We have a milkman!”

Yes we started having a delivery of two bottles per week 8years ago just to help the dairy keep running. Then when COVID hit we were delighted with the range of products on offer. So we have twice weekly deliveries of milk and yogurts, that arrive about 10.30pm. We had a visit one day from the milkman to say thank you for our custom as it was helping him keep his job. The prices are higher than the supermarkets but I'm doing my bit for the environment by using glass bottles.

If there was a local delivery and it could guarantee to deliver around 6am then I would opt for local delivery rather than buying milk weekly in the supermarket. We buy 3 four pint bottles which we store in the beer fridge located in the garage as I don't like too many heavy bottles on the house fridge door. Once the beer fridge bites the dust I hope to have found a milk delivery person

I had a milkman for years, but the company was changed from Co-Op to Unigate and went from daily deliveries to every other day. We carried on, but then it changed to a company called Milk and More and deliveries went down to three days a week and became more expensive and more unreliable. Our three children were all still living at home then and, because we were starting to buy more milk from supermarkets in order to supplement the milkman, it seemed unviable, so that was when we gave up our milkman.

For over 33 years we have had our milk delivered in glass bottles. Years ago we knew our milkman, he came round and collected the money every week and as we were last on his round he would have a beer with us. Since he retired it has all gone to paying on line and I have no idea who our milkman is or what time he delivers. I feel a bit sad about that as s\he never gets a Christmas tip or anything anymore. Likewise my weekly organic veg box, very early delivery, no idea who is delivering, used to have a personal link to them and I miss that.
Feel very put out on a post above referring to plastic, throw away bottles, I do hope you recycle them.

Unfortunately, the milk delivered by our local milkman is almost double the price of Tesco, so we have to forgo the luxury of doorstep deliveries.

A minimum extra £5.50pw (that’s a minimum £286 per year) makes it difficult to be virtuous about glass bottles.

Haven't seen milk deliveries for years. Nowadays we are lucky to get a postman and his/her deliveries can be spasmodic and any time between 11 and and 3 o'clock. Sorting office only open 8 to 10 am. Not great for a busy market town.

They all stopped were I am. There is a company that comes round once a week.

The reality is there isn't the demand anymore. I don't think the milk would stay on the doorstep for long in many areas before someone took it now.

There will always be 'elderly/disabled people who rely on doorstep deliveries'. It isn't financially viable for companies. Things have changed whether we like it or not.

My Dad gets long life milk. We stock him up and they last for months. Sainsburys do a good one, Dad keeps around 40 under the stairs and opens them as and when before putting them in the fridge.

Yes, rural Essex and our milkman delivers quietly at about 3 am.

I use longlife milk as well. I’ve always got about 4 in the cupboard/garage

In the 1970s with two small children milkman was a godsend. No supermarket deliveries then. The milkman had eggs, yoghurt, butter, cream, and I think bread and potatoes.

We have got a delivery from a small local one now around here but I've had the Tescos one for ages so not tried that.

I do see milk outside people's doorsteps though when I go out for a walk so it could go off or get stolen.

Yes we have a milkman been having them deliver our milk for few years. 3 times week anytime between midnight and four in the morning . Very pleased with their service. Sometimes I hear the milk float and the milk bottles jangling dosent bother me. What’s a few jangling milk bottles. Worse things could be happening !

Always have milk delivered to the house. No plastic, but nice glass bottles. I choose the organic for more goodness. Have never been disturbed by the milkman, nor has the milk ever been stolen or gone off.

We started getting milk delivered before the pandemic. My husband thought I signed up as I felt pressured on the doorstep. I put him right!and it was a godsend when the lockdown struck.
We were happy for years but the company became national and you had to give loads of notice to add items.
When a local farm offered delivery we switched. It’s genuinely a family farm diversifying, we could walk to collect the milk if we wanted. So properly local.
Interestingly they use 1 litre glass bottles, presumably so the rival national company can't nick their bottles.
They deliver cream in the most adorable 250ml glass bottles.
We’ve done a cost comparison and it’s about 4p a litre dearer so about 20p a month.

I was a partner with the Ex and we had a Dairy Crest franchise for a couple of years. We loved it but the dairy got greedy with their vehicle charge (written into the contract, couldn't go elsewhere!) Supermarkets, as I'm sure you are all aware, killed the trade. We got out and resumed "normal life"! I've not had a doorstep delivery since those days, but I have just taken it up again, twice a week, guaranteed to arrive before 7 am and he/she doesn't wake the dog! Hubby says the delivery arrives at just after midnight, so some late nights may beckon when we get the promised heatwave! So far I'm very happy with it, bit pricey, but so useful.

I was brought up in the country and lived on many farms. Drank milk straight from the cows or goats. I’m still here. I have high cholesterol apparently but I see it as borderline. For years I used Benecol and Flora. I’m going to die of something so hopefully it will be having a good time and drinking Jersey full cream milk and French wine.

We have had doorstep deliveries for years now- never heard or seen the milkman- order extra or cancel on the app- we live in a big city never have had any problems- I like to support him x

Years ago we had a milkman but often needed to cancel as we didn't use a regular amount. We were often overcharged as they failed to keep proper records. We then went over to a system where you bought tokens from the Co-op and when you wanted a bottle of milk you put a token in an empty bottle and they left a full one. That worked well but only until I moved house. I haven't used a doorstep delivery since. I still don't use a large amount of milk unless someone comes to stay with me so it's much easier to buy from the supermarket.

Blimey not surprised milkman never read the note being barked, growled and chased by 3 dogs. I would have done exactly the same.
