Bras for the older lady

I've just returned from M and S without a new bra after trying six on. I'd measured myself as instructed and tried on two different band and cup sizes but none were comfortable.
Okay I'm not as pert as I used to be but I'm not that bad either. Bras for the older lady online are rather sturdy, heavily elasticated and flesh coloured but I prefer a pretty one.
Anyone else having bra problems?

I’ve worn Triumph Amourette underwired non padded for years. M&S lost my custom over 20 years ago due to ill fitting and non fitting bras. I only buy them when on sale as they are expensive. They are lacy, pretty and come in lots of different colours with knickers to match. John Lewis often have them with 20% off. Or direct with Triumph website. Hope this helps.

Why do you need a bra ‘for the older lady’? I am 73 and wear bralettes, aka crop tops, have been wearing them for years since deciding I didn’t want to wear underwired bras every day. Different colours, plain or lacy, wonderfully comfortable.

I used to only ever wear underwired bras. and mistakenly thought they were giving me best support possible - how wrong I was! My DD advised me to go to a small lingerie company where the ladies are properly trained to measure, advise and fit all shapes and sizes. I was categorically told to dump the underwire bras. They are fully trained to fit people who have had breast surgery, often having specialist items made up for a client.
Several alternatives were offered to me and I came away with three gorgeous bras - not an underwire in sight.
My advice? - search locally for independent bra fitters, it is so worth it.

If you’re up North, try Sadie the Bra Lady - she’s quite famous.

We are conditioned by our mothers and social pressures to wear a bra from puberty onwards and, mostly, never question the "need" for this. Sadly, I was well into my late 60s when I realised that shoving myself into these horrible, uncomfortable and ridiculous garments was not a requirement and the world would not end if I Just Said No.

Oh, happy day! How I wish I'd been brave enough to do it sooner. As GSM says, there are bralettes and crop-tops if you do feel the need of a little support or don't want your nipples on view through a tee shirt. And, if you don't want to feel the bounce while you're jogging etc, take a look at the hundreds of sports bras on offer.

Anyone remember wearing Gossard Wonderbras?
We used to call them Rawhide bras - head ‘em up and move ‘em out!! 😂
(Only if you’re old enough to remember that series, with a young Clint Eastwood).

Surely bras are bras, where does older lady come into it, it is all about the size and comfort.

I always longed for big boobs rather than my fried eggs but after open heart surgery I really appreciate the fact I can ditch my bra with no problems!

A properly fitting bra should be comfortable. I have never found M & S to be very good at fitting. The fitting problem is often a too large back measurement and a too small cup.
Try going down a size in the back and up a size or two in the cup.

I wear Belle from Fantasie. they support a large, full bust and look attractive too. Look in the Bravissimo website.

Meant to say, nothing from M n S fits me in any size.

Bravissimo for me moderate to large boobs, the right shape and comfortable.

I was the same - until I had my first baby, and was so glad not to have to cope with two massive hot concrete footballs right afterwards - my own ex 34 As were quite enough.
I’ve never yearned for bigger boobs since.

I find M&S code number 09168626 very comfortable. Alternatively they have a good range of comfortable supportive sports bras.

Why do you need a bra ‘for the older lady’?

Well GSM, we all come in different shapes and sizes and good for you if you can enjoy a little lacy bralette.
For me, it would be neither use nor ornament. When bigger boobs start to head south, more substance is required and it's not that easy to find something that combines great shape support and prettiness. I'm assuming that is what the OP is looking for

GSM I for one find this a brilliant idea. I have just one that I used ( rarely) for exercise. Since reading your comment I put it on as a bra and wow! I’m sold, no welts in shoulders or looking to undo, my bra or get it off ….. thank you for the very sensible advice. There will be more.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 06-Jun-24 09:01:01

Pleased to hear that dogsmother. So comfy, you don’t know you’re wearing one.

I love my crop top bras. However, this captioned painting struck a chord!

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 08-Jun-24 08:52:24

Much easier to step into them!

Aveline Sat 08-Jun-24 09:35:36

Probably true if only my bum was narrower than my head!

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 08-Jun-24 09:43:16

Mine certainly isn’t! 😁

There was a similar thread only last week?
