I feel so bad tonight

Yes I have tried peanut butter.and cheese.mice don't bother me too much but I like to know where they are .I don't have cats now ,just a dog
Molly was acting very strange last week.woulnt stay in the living room and even looked a bit scared,no idea why but wondered if the mode was in there
A few months ago saw signs of rat droppings in my outhouse .but once cleared saw noore thank goodness.

It’s cost us nearly £500 this week to get the damage caused by mice under the bonnet of our car. So, I’d like to say well done you but I won’t as I know that I will get a barrage of criticism.
They aren’t my favourite creature at the moment.
I could send you all a photo of the molehills in the garden, two new ones this morning🥴
To cap that, although we have rabbit fenced the garden a kit has found its way through somewhere so we will be searching for a gap later.
We are feeling a little besieged.

We have a permanent humane trap in the greenhouse, and it works really well.

They are never shivering with fear though😀😀 in fact often just sat watching me or busy trying to dig their way out. They then get taken to a release point about 200 yards from the house on the Downs along with some seed to help them on their way.

I must admit I have used the splat traps (so-called inhumane) as the "humane" traps did not seem that way to me. I have found trapped mice in them shivering with fear and in great distress after being trapped for hours. And you have to drive them somewhere to release them as they simply come back in if you release them in your garden.

I take the corpses of mice caught in standard traps and throw them into the field behind me where a raptor will have a meal of them.

Sorry if I sound hard-hearted, but I live out in the country and the whole cycle of life and death is played out in front of me all the time. If I did not take firm action I would have a house full of mice and rats and much else besides. The local farmers are ruthless about killing rabbits.

Well, my sister was killed whn someon accidentally knocked he off her bike. I know what means most to me - and it is not a mouse.

I will always try and get them out of the house and elsewhere alive but I have no compunction about killing them. There non-stop droppings are a health hazard and they make any food they go near inedible and it has to be wasted by being thrown away.

In developing country mice and rats can devastate crops and lead to malnutrition and starvation in children and adults.

It was an automatic reaction and not intended so your excused Bluebell, but I do hope he or she hasn’t left a little family grieving somewhere. Just saying.🥲

Whilst babysitting at DD3’s recently, I opened a drawer and there, staring back at me, was a cute little mouse!

Needless to say, SiL put various traps around baited with chocolate and cheese. It was a clever little mouse as it managed to eat the food without setting off the traps.

After three weeks of still seeing droppings around the kitchen, they tried a different trap, like a little see saw which tips up, the door shuts with the mouse inside.

It duly did its stuff and DD3 carried it to a field at 10.30 at night to set it free. She said it stopped and looked back at her. My 35 year old daughter cried her eyes out!

I know you must feel upset, but accidents happen. I once shut the window not realising there was a little gecko there and I chopped his tail off. I felt horrible but like you it was not intentional so don’t upset yourself about it. It wouldn’t have suffered.

Oh BlueBelle what a horrible feeling. It was a complete accident of course but I do know how you feel. I ran over a rabbit once which just must have panicked and ran in front of my car.
I hope you managed to clear it up and get off to bed eventually.

How many of us have accidentally run over a pheasant or rabbit, say, if one has dashed out on a country road bang in front of the car?

Sometimes it just happens, and you can’t help it.

So don’t feel bad. It could have run outside and been pounced on by a prowling cat.

I understand how you feel.
It's natural to feel guilty. Remember, it was an accident and you were just trying to protect your home.
Be kind to yourself.

We have a family living in our wall. Not sure if it is mice, rats or ringtails but we can’t get at them unless we break the plaster and even then we don’t know exactly where they are. Just hear squeaks at night now and then and scurrying noises. The cats are very interested but they can’t get at them either. Very annoying. If the cats catch them they bring them in to show me and they are usually dead by then. If they are still alive I put them outside but last time I did that I was bitten on my finger. Beast.

What do you put in your humane traps to tempt the mice?

Oats.

We live surrounded by woods it’s where I grew up then farm land. Our garden is visited by an abundance of birds hedgehogs mice wood rats and foxes. It was an education growing up seeing all this wild life.
I remember as a teenager working in a local hairdressers as an apprentice watching one of the staff kill a mouse in the staff room. She was very proud of herself as she put the brush away I was disgusted it upset me.
You have a conscience about what you did it was an accident not cruelty that says a lot about you.

I have set a humane mouse trap in several areas but not seen any thing chewed either
A few weeks ago I saw mouse droppings and again set a humane mouse trap.i could tell it was still around.it had even got into my medicine drawer and eaten some vitamins.do could be a very health mouse by now
Last year I found one of my snow boots chewed to bits and no sign of the other one at all
There could be several mice for all I know now but can seem to catch any

If the mice are around and not going into them, have you tried peanut butter? A man who knows about these things working in our local hardware shop told me to try it - apparently it has a strong smell to a mouse's nose and they love it.

You should not feel bad. It was a complete accident and you did not intend it any harm. I do know how you feel though as I was driving and could not stop quickly enough to prevent running into a pigeon as it swooped down. I could see it lying there as I looked through the mirror. Please don’t beat yourself up about something you could not prevent.

I would feel the same,but would take a bit of comfort in that it was an accident as if it were allowed to breed I would have had to get pest control in.
