Will there be any summer?

Yesterday I went through summer clothes which I have had for many years, pruned them down considerably and took a lot to the charity shop. We used to spend a lot of time abroad but prefer to stay home these days and summer clothes just seem superfluous.

We’ve got to get past the longest day before we hurtle anywhere and it’s downhill to the C word.

It’s lovely outside now (N Bucks) sunny, pleasantly warm - ideal for sitting out with a glass of something cold.
Probably because I decided to wear a jumper today!

Holiday …

My tiny hands are frozen…off on hold to the West Country tomorrow, packing for all seasons. In the meantime , heating is on, as is my electric blanket , every night.

9 degrees on my car dashboard, I remember the same temperature in January .

If you go and buy a base layer merino wool top or trousers from Mountain Warehouse - who at the moment here have a sale on - then you can do as I do. So on a horribly cold and windy day I put this warm top and trousers on underneath, but then put my summer linen trousers and my cotton long sleeved T shirt on , so I can at least look summery whilst feeling warmer!! They will come in handy in the winter which they are really meant for and as ,no doubt , I shall have to think long and hard about when I can afford to put my heating on I shall be wearing them in autumn and winter and get my moneys worth from them. Hey ho, maybe the sun will come out now I have bought these!!

Last year, June was a very hot months with temperatures hitting 30 degrees. July and August were a non event with a late heatwave in September. From what the long range forecast says, the weather should settle down by the middle of the month and the temperatures should start rising.
Actually May was quite warm and sunny, and last weekend was warm, so it hasn't been totally bad and this year.

Climbing rose has mildew, cosmos seedlings have disappeared - I’m assuming slugs! Really very few flowers in the garden but lush grass and weeds!
I’m in the south east and although I don’t like heatwaves , I’m fed up with sitting with a blanket in the evenings and haven’t worn short sleeves at all yet.Yes think I will also restart Vit D, I usually only take it wintertime .The weatherman said this morning it maybe summer in July and August which will be nice for the kids as it’s usually over by the time they break up !

What is it with this day thing! Perhaps a Freudian slip.

It’s the longest day. I feel like I am never going to move out of this SAD year! The sun definately makes me feel better and I get weighed down with depression each day as it is. Come on summer we need you!

I think it is global warming which is causing global wetting and climate chaos. More wet equals more cloud 🙁 and rain.

We have the heating on too and I am wearing my fleecies over my t shirts. I bought some vitamin D last week as I feel that I’ve hardly had any doses of sunlight this year.

It’s a rubbish summer, just like last year. We are so pathetically grateful if we get a couple of hot days together.

We had our heat on last night and it came on this morning too.

This is usually my favourite time of year as we approach the longest day. With lots of daylight (and hopefully sunshine) i am (usually) energised and bouncing. Instead we have had seemingly endless greyness coupled with a cold north wind/breeze and of course the rain.

I feel as miserable as the weather.

It’s interesting that you say that about your garden karmalady, because mine is not making the same progress. The slugs are rampant, and everything is delayed. My seedlings are making very slow progress, I don’t think they like the cold nights. My roses and peonies have been battered to hell by the rain and wind. Do try a beer trap for the slugs! My contrived one (I posted in the gardening forum) has proved very successful.

no thanks. I used beer traps earlier and the resulting slug sludge stunk to high heaven, The nematodes have worked and I put any residual snails into some salt water

My garden here in the south west isn’t looking too good. Things seem slow. The Sweet Peas look awful and I may pull them up. Roses not flowering yet. A Crab Apple tree is diseased. I am determined not to waste any more money and am researching plants that will withstand any weather and that slugs don’t like. Also this wind is so disheartening. I wonder why it’s windy every day.

casdon, I used slug nelatodes twice and they seem to have worked. I gave the roses a feed of top rose in april and the rest of the garden vitax Q4

I pruned the roses differently last autumn, I too was fed up of heavy blooms gettting wiped out by rain. I pruned like I do my gooseberries, ie very little off, I have tall bushes now and had hundreds of small roses which have withstood the weather

Personally. I am loving this cooler weather but regret not being out cycling as much as I would in a drier summer , also regret not wearing the beautiful summer dresses and two kaftans that I made for this `summer`

I have fed the garden, but although the plants are healthy, it’s the delay factor that’s worrying, and of course things rotting off earlier in the season because there was so much rain. Most of my roses haven’t even flowered yet, and those that have were battered. I haven’t tried nematodes - my garden is large, with a lot of cultivated areas so I didn’t think they would work but I’ll try anything now I think.

I’ve tried beer traps Witzend, the problem being that my dog drinks the beer! I’ll investigate to see if there is something available that is shaped in a way that attracts snails but is dog proof.

Onward and upward, maybe we’ll have a hot, sunny July - I do hope so.

what is very worrying is the farming situation and there will be a food shortage, according to a dd. Add the weather to the fact that farmers have had to put 20% of land to trees

King George 11 famously said the British summer is three fine days and a thunderstorm. This year I think that might be about right!
Currently it's 7° cloudy and dull where I live.
This is not summery weather.

If this is true then nothing much has changed since 1760.
Climate change?

It’s supposed to be getting hotter not colder. We haven’t had a really hot Summer in years, not since the 1980s. I think some countries have,though. Just change which has been going on since the world began.

I've been thinking for some time that we're going to have to adjust our expectations of what makes a perfect summer. With our climate undoubtedly changing, 'summer' clothes are going to have to be warmer, and lovely lightweight outfits worn on only a few days a year.
Our pathetic attempts at recycling and saving the planet are too late to make a real difference, especially when countries like China keep belching out toxic smoke ad lib. although we must continue to do our bit.
At lease our gardens are making the most of it and looking really lush.
So we adapt and survive.

Greyduster is spot on, IMO. That horrible biting wind finds my every crevice (!) and there's no joy in being outside, a lot of the time. The wind seems to be far more noticeable than in previous years.
