Looking For A Sofa: Colour Choices Are Underwhelming!

Personally I'm not tired of grey yet either, but I'm glad to hear that brighter colours are re-appearing. I think it's nice to have a bit of individuality in the way we all decorate/ furnish.

A neutral coloured sofa allows you to change the mood of the room easily, with different coloured cushions, rugs, wall art, etc. In our sitting room (2 dark grey sofas) we have a large red Indian rug in the winter, with red velvet cushions, which makes it cosy. In warmer months, I have a large oatmeal rug, and colourful cushions.

Just a bit of support for grey! It is a good neutral colour which allows for colourful cushions, curtains and walls - just like our lounge!

We have 2 light grey tweedy looking Ercol sofas and an armchair. We also have a pale pink velvet armchair. Our walls are a dark raspberry colour, our curtains and some cushions are floral and some other cushions are bright pink.

We get lots of compliments.

I think that grey has become the new magnolia !
Every interior seems to have grey everywhere .
I loved it years ago , before it became so fashionable .
I think that will have to Google until you find an appealing colour .
I'm looking for green at the moment and the local charity shop is my first choice for looking !

Mustard, a cross between teal and kingfisher and a sort of bottle green.
They are gorgeous.

I agree they are a very good company our sofa and two chairs were made there you can choose everything about the suite height width everything and the choice of fabric is amazing. But they don't come cheap ours was around £6k including a footstool
They are far better made than anything you may find on the high street.

I have a pre 1950s sofa and 3 chairs. Parker Knoll. They have been reupholstered several times but the last time was mindblowingly expensive.

I do know I'm paying for his skilled time...

I was given my son’s 20 year old cream leather sofa set. Found the most wonderful, talented, reasonably priced furniture restorer. He changed the 3 seater, 2 seater and armchair , to a stunning burnt orange colour, by staining it and polishing it. I am so, so pleased. Everyone who visits thinks I’ve purchased a new set. It will go for another 20 years. It will see me out. And, wait for it…..only charged me £250. But I did give him a very large tip. I must have been one of his last customers. He said he was planning to retire. What a talent !

It’s a lovely colour scheme NotSpaghetti isn’t it. I love it. My 25 year old boring brown leather suite thankfully is still going strong as current prices are eye watering . As my Mum used to say this suite “will see me out ! 😆

Don’t get grey!
It may have been popular a few years ago but looks so dull and depressing.
I like textured soft furnishings- pebble type tweeds etc

Golly- grey is so depressing . Look online at houses for sale and some look as if they've been photographed in black and white - grey laminate flooring, furniture, curtains, kitchens..

Not sure that grey would go with my cream and terracotta living room, most of the furniture antique, but the cream settee I did buy looks lovely.

Grey, a lovely neutral colour, you can dress it up with anything, any colour. Just bought my Mid grey sofa, so comfortable, dressed it up with bright colours. Goes well with my lovely velvet char. I feel my new sofa will age better with time, not look washed out after a few years, and is a lovely pallet for colours which you can change with the season.

I bought 2 two seaters with loose covers from IKEA 8 years ago in a taupe which fitted my colour scheme at the time but also bought a spare set of covers in teal - all for £2000.

Changed my colours in 2020 and used the teal ones until last year, when I bought a lovely wine colour set for £500 from a company in Lithuania who had a brilliant choice of colours for ex IKEA stock sofas.

I get bored with same old and like to freshen sitting room soft furnishings up every 3-4 years! I’ve got my eye on some powder blue ones next…😉

Fairisle, I totally agree with you,,,the sofa and chairs we had for over 10 years,,they were comfortable,but getting shabby, and chair had a broken spring. we went to a well known store ,chose one that looked nice but in only 3 years it feels as if the padding's flattened in the arm rests...and I have troule getting up ...I wish now that we had got our old one upholstered and recovered.I'm always comparing them..

What I wanted to say was that personally, wouldn’t spend a lot of money on a fashion colour sofa, if I wanted to keep it a long time.
I’ve brown leather in my lounge and grey tweed from Next in the family room.

I think a lot depends on what you pay and how long you plan to keep it.
DD bought a turquoise sofa a few years ago, teaming it with mustard. Then she moved it to a different room after 5 years and now has a navy blue chesterfields in her main lounge. I know lots of people who buy fairly cheap sofas, but are happy to change them when they re-decorate.

A friend of mine has bought two sofas from DFS recently. One is orange and the other a hot pink.. both covered in velvet which has been treated.. they are really glamorous.. big range of other colours too.

I bought my newest sofa five years ago and had the same issue. I walked into the showroom and said show me something that isn't grey , brown or beige.

I ended up with a lovely bright green but the fabric isn't ideal.

it wad the same when looking for new bathroom tiles- just grey brown or beige. I found it so depressing I've put my new bathroom on hold.

What is with design these days? So dull and boring.

I think it also dependson how much you want to pay. We paid £2,000 plus for ours about 5 years ago and found a wide range of styles and colours to choose from.

You also get more choice if you steer a way from the big furniture chains like DFS, Vineys and Lee Longlands.

John Lewis have some lovely sofas, ours bought last year was a lovely teal colour xx

I agree with J52 about some places having a wide range of choices for colour material and cost.

Our main L shaped sofa is soft grey leather. We were able to choose the style, exact size and leather from a wide range of quality and colours. We ordered it from a fairy local family firm who make them to order after visiting their showroom/ workroom.

When we wanted to replace the sofa in our caravan ( it wasn’t very comfortable) we followed a similar process.
This time we had to be very specific with measurements. The choice and combination of styles, colours and materials was overwhelming.

We chose a long couch with a chaise on the end in a turquoise blue soft material.
Also a family firm recommended to us.
It cost less than half the price of our sofa at home and is far comfier.

My son and Dil recently bought a 2 seater and 3 seater sofa and a single armchair . I was trying to think of a descriptive word for the shade of blue and Primrose53 has nailed it. The 3 seater and armchair are peacock blue and the 2 seater sofa is a beautiful rich shade of green. Not colours I would have thought of combining but it’s lovely. They’ve added mustard cushions and other accessories and it looks great.
