Kim Jong Un - the unlikely fashionista

I got very serious yesterday with a post about politics so I'm lightening my mood today ...

...am I alone in finding the trend of men having the Kim Jon Un haircut not only a bit weird, but unattractive?

Shaving the sides and the back of the head and leaving hair (lots or little) on the crown. It's kind of a reverse mullet.

It seems to make a lot of men look as though their head is completely out of balance with their body.

When I see a man who I would have previously thought to be attractive (in whatever varying degree) and they've now gone to a North Korean barber, my heart sinks. grin

I was a teenager during the 1960s and, probably as a result of this, I still find long hair on men attractive. Most men, in my opinion, look better with long hair. Perhaps modern, young women find the shaven sides with hair on top style attractive.
To me, it often just looks like a cheap toupee.

A lot of women are going in for the shaven side look too.
They look like they're being treated for ringworm.

Fashion- like ripped jeans and spider eye lashes. In a few years they'll wonder what they were thinking.

The SS favoured that style of haircut. Shaved sides which left the hair on the crown looking like a second hand toupee. Not that anyone was likely to tell them that. Or Kim Jong Un either.

I'm glad to have the chance to say I absolutely LOATHE that type of haircut. When I first saw it I just thought it was someone silly trying to be different but now it is literally everywhere. It is deeply unattractive and makes handsome young men look quite hideous. There are different variations though, some not nearly as bad as others. It's nothing new though. I believe the Saxons and Vikings had that style.

I'm just thankful I was young in the 60s when men had longer hair. I wouldn't fancy most of today's crop with their shaved heads, tattoos, piercings, necklaces and earrings. They either look well 'ard or very feminine.

I am also ecstatic that someone has brought this up. It is an absolutely ghastly look. And people are delusional if they think that it is attractive. Judging by today's youth, they will probably stick a tattoo on the shaved bits, which will be even worse! When the hair grows, at least it will be covered up.

I always think of tattoos as a form of self-harm. But that it just me! Have you noticed how many television chefs have at least one arm totally covered in blue? Is it a club membership scheme? Or have I missed something?

Does anybody remember Blackadder I? (TV comedy with Rowen Atkinson)

I would post a picture but I don't know how to.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 14-Jun-24 15:00:35

Kim Jong Un is ( ahem) not very handsome.
I think the plan is to make everyone else equally not .... good looking. It's working very well.

Dickens Fri 14-Jun-24 15:07:35

Glad I'm not the only one who finds this style unattractive.

In fact, I think it looks brutal and ugly.

I saw a man recently (grocery delivery guy) who had almost all his head shaved except for a small clod of hair on top. He looked like an egg with a toupée.

Aveline Fri 14-Jun-24 15:09:03

My DGS (who is gorgeous) has this daft style. His head is shaved at the sides but his very curly hair lies on top and looks like a plate of spaghetti on his head!

Squiffy Fri 14-Jun-24 16:00:29

It looks like a cowpat that’s matured!

Grannynannywanny Fri 14-Jun-24 16:12:32

My handsome 15 year old grandson has had this hair style for a few months. I’ll be glad when it goes out of fashion.

The young man who works in my local hair salon has his hair cut in this style and also has tattoos on his shaved scalp. Can you imagine how painful that procedure must have been?

I'm so glad I started this thread - some of the replies are priceless!

Those shaved hairstyle things make me think of Henry V.

Some dodgy crown and doublet and hose.

It sort of fascinates me. Who says what's in fashion?

TerriBull Fri 14-Jun-24 16:39:51

Horrible it looks like a mushroom. The Peaky Blinders haircuts, another style so hideous it detracts from Cillian Murphy's good looks, however, he's just in character of course, what's the excuse of those who emulate that look. Personally, I prefer longer hair on men, not Jesus long, although I expect he wore that look well, but shaven heads imo just look thuggish even if the head has a mop of hair on the top and that's also what they look like, a human version of a tool to wash the floor with. Then again fashions come and go, pity Kim Jong Un can't just go and take his vile hair cut with him.

TerriBull Fri 14-Jun-24 16:41:04

Yes Zakouma, definitely like Henry V, the one and only picture I've seen of him.

Chestnut Fri 14-Jun-24 16:44:31

I had a feeling this haircut was somehow connected with Peaky Blinders although I never watched it. And yes, sure enough it looks like PB is what has brought it into fashion! I like it even less now. It was a hygienic way of avoiding head lice and also of hiding your identity under a cap when engaged in criminal activities.

And trousers that defy gravity. So many walk around with the crotch just above their knees showing the world a back view of their underwear. It looks really uncomfortable. My fingers itch to creep up behind them and yank up the waistband to where it should be. My teenage granddaughter tells me it's called sagging. Very apt.

CanadianGran Fri 14-Jun-24 19:13:08

I'm not a fan either. Both my adults sons, as well as DH have a more traditional cut.

I'm seeing a lot of mullets now on young boys. At my GC soccer game last night, the 8-10 year old crowd was almost 1/2 mullet. I don't like it at all!

keepingquiet Fri 14-Jun-24 19:13:57

Sarnia you have just reminded me of when I was in a nearby town recently. Two policeman were escorting a man who seemed so drunk he could hardly stand up. I was following behind and kept watching the man's trousers falling further and further down.
I caught the eye of the one of the policemen and told him the man was going to lose his trousers any minute now!
not a pleasant image I recall...
