Kim Jong Un - the unlikely fashionista

I got very serious yesterday with a post about politics so I'm lightening my mood today ...

...am I alone in finding the trend of men having the Kim Jon Un haircut not only a bit weird, but unattractive?

Shaving the sides and the back of the head and leaving hair (lots or little) on the crown. It's kind of a reverse mullet.

It seems to make a lot of men look as though their head is completely out of balance with their body.

When I see a man who I would have previously thought to be attractive (in whatever varying degree) and they've now gone to a North Korean barber, my heart sinks. grin

This is "sagging".

I know our generation is not supposed to understand the fashion (using the word loosely) but - what is the point of wearing trousers in a way which makes them quite likely to fall down - and I've seen videos of it happening - if you make a false move?

I can see that hipster type jeans showing the midriff are attractive (on the right body shape) - but they are a tight fit and unlikely to fall down. But baggy trouser sitting below your bum ??

If you research the 'history' of the sagging-fashion, you can see where it originated and why it became a symbolic statement for some youth.

I think sagging is a bit passé now, so I’ve been told! I don’t mind the peaky blinders cut, but the Kim John Un one is rather extreme and doesn’t highlight his best features🤣🤣
This thread does so remind me of my parents and their peers bemoaning the hairstyles and fashions of ‘the youth’, in my case the hippies. ‘ they need a good haircut and a bath’.
It does make me smile.

Jaxjacky You are so right about the older generation always disapproving of the latest youth trends. Though I wouldn't dare pass loud remarks to young people in the street in the same way that the oldies of yesteryear used to do.

Were all of you never young? It looks like the answer is no.

Its not a new look, the hairstyles on the Bayeux Tapestry and the same.

Interesting - thanks!

Do I detect the flutter of Harpy's wings?
Some posts have indicated that we were disapproved of by the older generation when younger. To condemn us all is a trifle harsh.

Exactly this. I thought this was a lovely post and those who responded made some remarks which made me laugh. Predictably, along comes someone who wants to pour cold water on it.

First we had the teddy boys, then the Beatles haircut shocked the older generation when it came along, followed by the long haired hippie look and the skinheads.

But the Peaky Blinders haircut is so UGLY and does nothing to enhance a young man's appearance. Then we have the sleeve tattoos and shaven heads, they are all gross. I'm so thankful not to be a young woman today because I wouldn't fancy the young men at all. I find shaven heads, tattoos and piercings all deeply unattractive.

It's just another fashion / style though.

Perhaps the reason some of us don't like the 'Peaky Blinders' cut is because it looks a bit brutal?

When you see shaved heads or very close-cut hair, I think it reminds us older generation of armies, schools, institutions, etc, where the first prerequisite on entering them - appeared to be a haircut.

Possibly.

My step-son calls it "the military haircut"!

As for tattoos, it obviously appeals to an awful lot of people who see it quite differently - as body-art. So from that perspective, I understand it, but I don't like it either. However, some of the nicest, kindest people I've met are covered in ink!

I rather like the ‘Viking’ look, with hair undercut and long on top - plaited or similar. I’m not a lover of tattoos, but my daughter and her friends have them, and the ones I know are lovely people - a bit ‘alternative’, caring and kind. Not at all unlike the long-haired friends of my own youth. Older people made all sorts of judgments about them, too, and only some were true.

Chestnut Sun 16-Jun-24 10:13:59

If only they all looked like that! The sideburns are nice, and the whole look makes the shaven sides not seem so ugly, plus there is a ponytail so the back view won't be the same. I doubt you'll see many looking that good. It's the Peaky Blinders cuts that seem to be in fashion.

Doodledog Sun 16-Jun-24 12:51:55

That's Travis Fimmel playing Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings. He's gorgeous, isn't he? grin If you haven't seen it, you can get it on Prime (free with subscription) and various other channels if you pay.

There are 5 seasons, and I honestly think it's one of the best things I've ever watched on TV.

Chestnut Sun 16-Jun-24 13:48:37

Well maybe I should watch it, seeing I had a DNA test showing 3% Norwegian which can only be Viking. 😂

Doodledog Sun 16-Jun-24 17:43:05

That's all the excuse you need. . . .grin

MissAdventure Sun 16-Jun-24 18:03:06

I really don't like the Kim Jong Un hairdo.
It looks like cowpats on their heads.

MissAdventure Sun 16-Jun-24 18:10:13

My grandson is a "Sagger", I suppose you'd call it.

Trousers at half mast.

In our town, several men's hairdressers have opened up in the last couple of years and they seem constantly busy. However, fashions may change and if perhaps long hair for men became popular again then most of them would be out of business.
