Received an email this morning from a well known greeting card from that I use. Why don’t these mistakes get noticed? I hate seeing this spelling mistake.

Pronunciation annoys me too. A female news person yesterday kept talking about uz instead of us.Contra bute is one of my hates too.

It’s not exactly a spelling mistake, but because I’ve recently seen it twice elsewhere, ‘pack’ lunch, instead of ‘packED’! It really winds me up.

And while I’m at it, ‘mash’ potato, ‘ice’ coffee, etc.

There was a young girl from Madras
Who had the most wonderful ass
It was not round and pink,
As Americans would think,
It was grey, had long ears and ate grass

Sorry, just lowered the tone still further. I agree with you Witzend

😂😂

Apologies for lowering the tone, but it really rouses my ire when Brits write ‘ass’ when they mean ARSE!

If it was good enough for Chaucer and Shakespeare….

I’m also seeing “where” for “were “ - to a Scot, these sound quite different (just as we don’t have a Prince of Whales” ) 🤣🤣

Unbelievable.

I was reminded of yet another petty hate of mine. A woman on TV said she liked to lay in the sun. She didn't look a bird.

Witzend the 'Who's job....' was a definite gaffe. My jaw dropped, I pointed to the screen and turned to the colleagues at my table. Not one of them had noticed and when I turned back the screen had quickly been changed.

kircubbin2000 that horrible 'Where's Johnny? He's went to the toilet." thing is normal, everyday parlance up here in the North East. I hear examples of it more or less every day.

Trying to sort out the garden just now, and listening to “I’m sorry I haven’t a clue” / Radio 4 on BBC Sounds, on headphones - and reminding myself what FUN language is!!

I’m a bit of a pedant when it comes to spelling & punctuation but don’t get too agitated when it’s probably a typo or auto-correct. What really annoys me is when things are incorrect on a website or notice. Mainly ‘complimentary’ instead of ‘complementary’ - completely different meanings. I haven’t yet had a complimentary breakfast tell me I’m looking good or a complimentary toiletry praising my hair.
But possibly even worse is what people literally do, or do literally. Some have even literally died laughing, literally fallen over, literally torn out their hair …..

Complimentary means both expressing a compliment and supplying free of charge.
Complementary is when something enhances or completes something.

Eek, I'm horrified it has both meanings, thank you Pittcity. One less word to raise my hackles in future. :-)

My first language is Welsh and we have a word for "cuddle" which is Cwtsh. Yet nearly everywhere it's speeled as Cwtch. Ch in Welsh has a completely different sound to Sh. It really gets my goat up.

My BIL, German and a teacher of English in his own country used to correct menus in this country. He would take out his red pen and write on the menu and rub out the incorrect apostrophes on chalkboards.

Oh yes, that has to be the most oft repeated and irritating error.

Ah, yes grin

Perhaps those who posted about shielding were too unwell to notice nor care. ☹

You only have to read the current thread on how Covid and shielding to see has it has affected people. It is a very sensitive subject.

We were eating out with friends at a restaurant one evening and the waitress had handed us all menus. One of our friends is an English teacher and he was gazing at the menu and tutting.
When the waitress returned to take our order, he started pointing out all the spelling and grammatical errors on the menu. Without turning a hair the waitress said "Would sir like a red pen?"grin

I do a lot of competitions, so due to having to sign up for newsletters get a lot of emails that I don't always read and delete straight away. However a particular one attracted my attention to read it then wished I hadn't as there were so many grammatical and spelling errors - I was so incensed I wrote back to them pointing them out and asking why it wasn't proof-read before being emailed out. I didn't expect a reply, but had a very nice email back acknowledging the errors and even had some samples of their products to say thank you.
